Hey bud, first off, back off a bit ok? Second.
Rivals Decision Reveals Deeper Issues in Recruiting Rules
and

NCAA classifies Rivals as a recruiting service - CBSSports.com

I was in no way saying your past employer had done anything wrong, so relax. Then again if you want to pull the media card, lets talk. Maybe my mag cost $1000 per year, but I am media. OR are you saying EVERYTHING on scout and rivals was free? Heck maybe my mag cost $5000 per year.
I know what they did and dont think you, your ex employer or some a hole taking $25000 from oregon can talk down to me. Rules are rules, and it is not my fault somebody wants to skim and not put in the work.
Then again, you are talking to someone who hates cheaters. I hate the fact that HS's "recruit" (coached on both side of that) and I hate a holes who scam kids or their families out of rent money for "services". Ya feel me?
Sorry, hot topic with me. Some people give others a bad name. Not saying you, just saying the whole subject gets me a little wound up.

I don't know what "pull the media card" means, or where I ever said Scout/Rivals content was all free. Rob Howe (Scout's Iowa publisher/editor) receives media credentials for Iowa games, as do most Scout and Rivals school publishers. It's crucial to their coverage, which isn't limited to recruiting, and it took some years to build up the relations and credibility for the schools to provide those credentials. They definitely don't give them to every random dude who says "I'm media, let me inna the game!". It really helped that Scout was also in the print magazine business, as it gave SIDs/ADs cover to say "yes" while telling internet-only guys "no". Anyway, I appreciate the link. It's a different angle, this time they're asking schools not to pay for subscriptions, rather than blocking contact with Scout/Rivals people. But their definition of prohibited service is "video of nonscholastic competition that is not available to the general public", obviously directed at camp/combine video... which could be overcome easily, just don't post it, or make it free. Or maybe they'll just accept the revenue hit since its a relatively small component of their paid subscriber base.

The articles are a year old so it would be interesting to know how it played out.

I share your feeling about the scammers, as I said in my private note. The guys charge parents $1,000 to put Billy Bob's video "in front of D-1 coaches, guaranteed!" (translation: they bulk-mail DVDs that never get viewed). We got approached about once a month by dirtbags like that wanting to "talk about a strategic relationship". Again though it's been 5+ years for me so who knows what's happening now. I assume its sleazier than ever. There probably is a path for an honest person with coaching experience like yourself to make a mark and provide a respected service, you would hope so, but my gawd getting heard above the sleaze will be difficult. I wish you well.

Thank you for a reasonable answer. I know I tend to get a little abrasive with such things. For that I am sorry.
Here is the problem, where is the media getting the info on recruits they have? Is it recycled? Or are they actually scouting these kids? I mean, is it fair to say me, if I spend 65hrs a week gathering up to date info on speed, H/W, if they have been in trouble with the law, grades, NOT to mention countless hours talking with the coaches and watching practice and games for some one to recycle? Is that not still scouting even if recycled?
Like I said I know the by-laws and it would seem to me it may just be easier to charge $5000 per subscription and call it media. Then maybe not so many people could recycle.
Do you understand what I am saying? It is that stuff that makes it hard on a guy.

Btw asking kids or their parents for a grand is not anything anymore, you must have been out of it for awhile. I wont do it. Those are the ones who give people a bad name. I scout, I am not a salesman. Talent in coaching and players speaks for itself I should not have to sell either way.
Glad you see it the same.

Was thumbing through my Phil Steele's College Football from 2012. He has one section where he ranks every division 1A(FBS) school's returning experience. Iowa's came into the season at #100, 11th in the B1G. That's one reason for optimism this year. This team will be significantly more experienced. Add that made up the the bulk of the experienced players last year were from weak recruiting classes and ir's likely that not only will the team likely be more experienced but that experience is likely to be more talented. Obviously QB is an exception but I think we can all agree the position under performed last year, and that being so it's unlikely the position will be weaker this year, or at least not so much so that it negates the better depth and experience at the other positions. The schedule, though, is significantly harder. So, I think 7 wins next year would be a more significant achievement than in most years.

Can't speak for others, but Scout and Rivals have people in the field actually scouting kids. I believe 24/7 does also. As much in-person as possible, but also write-ups based on video. No scout can get to every kid and every game/camp/combine in person. They work very hard, I used to approve the travel and expenses.

Most other media then quote Scout/Rivals/247, which is fine if it's attributed and not skimmed wholesale. Copyright laws govern that, and the companies watch it pretty closely. Especially now that they're owned by Fox Sports and Yahoo Sports respectively.

Check out College Sports Recruiting - College Recruiting & Scholarships | NCSA. They charge too, but unlike most, provide actual services for the money. In particular, they have an experienced coach evaluate your little snowflake and set or reset your expectations, probably the most valuable service of all for delusional parents. Randy Taylor, mentioned earlier, now works there and I know him to be a class act. Looking around at online comments from parents, they seem to have a good reputation especially for non-revenue sports (softball, track etc.) which don't have big recruiting budgets. If you're an all-conference football star in a populous state, the coaching networks know about you already, you probably don't need a recruiting service.

I agree, I think you can spin a 4-8 season with some kids. But having a 2-10 after a 4-8, not many kids who have real talent are going to buy into that.

Of course they won't buy into that ... which is why a 2-10 season would be KF's last season

Hey I hope I'm wrong ... I usually am the guy that figures out a way they win all 12 in my preseason prediction
