Iowa vs. Rutgers Predictions

This is gonna get me chastised, but ISU is a good team and they’d beat the shit out of Rutgers. Iowa is going to win this one.

Indiana will likely be a different story. But…also remember how 2021 was “supposed” to go, when Indiana was “supposed” to be really good coming in. People can go on and on about how good or bad teams are, but with the cupcake games getting cupcakey-er for every team, we have zero idea how good any squad is until conference play starts. I’m going to be watching the Illinois/Indiana game pretty close this weekend.

Iowa is going to run into another decent defense. Not UMass and will prob look pretty underwhelming on offense with challenges in the passing game. We will all be back where after we were after the Iowa State game. Hope not, but would not surprise me.

I think the Hawks will handle them, and by handle I mean 17-10. Indiana is going to be the first real one.

Iowa. 17

Rutgers. 10

Under Schiano, Rutgers is just a poor man’s version of Iowa. Until Schiano can crack the code the way Pat Fitzgerald did, and Matt Campbell seemingly has…expecting an Iowa W.

Rutgers is 3-0 but hasn't played anyone on the level of Iowa State. I tend to think Iowa State is similar to last year, perhaps a bit of a return to the mean (That would be down), but it is too early to tell.

Rutgers strength is their passing game. It's not on par with Iowa State but expect them to test Iowa's defensive back seven if the QB has time. Rutgers running game is a complement to their passing game. Injuries on the offensive line have been an ongoing issue.

Rutgers biggest weakness has been its defensive backfield. Ohio's experienced QB, Parker Navarro carved them up. The new transfer QB at Miami-OH piled on the passing yards, but has had a lot of trouble converting 3rd down and red zone opportunities. Rutgers has been decent against the run thus far.

Rutgers schedule thus far.

Ohio Bobcats 31
Rutgers 34

Miami-OH 17
Rutgers 45

Norfolk St. 10
Rutgers 60

I'm not drawing any conclusions from the Norfolk St. game. I don't think Power 4 & Group of 5 conference teams should play Div II teams.

I slightly favor Iowa. I think both offenses will have a bit of luck against opposing defenses, but both will be very inconsistent. Rutgers has the better offense, Iowa the better defense. The biggest variable is how Iowa's questionable passing offense does against Rutgers struggling defensive backfield.

Iowa 27; Rutgers 24

You mean we shouldn't give the Heisman to Riola and anoint Lil Debby National Champions after they took care of Houston Christian? LOL.

For some reason, I think this team will continue to grow and get better much like many Hawkeye teams under KF. That doesn't mean we run the table or blow teams out, but I am hopeful that we continue to become more and more comfortable in Lester's offense and our defense under Phil continues to be formidable. Time will tell. I may not like it, but there may be some nailbiters this year.

Is this our UCLA game from last year where we lose to an inferior team who plays the game of their life and we are out of sorts because we had to ride a plan for more than two hours? Nah. We usually do ok on the East Coast.

Iowa 24
Frankly Scarlet 13
