VanLaere’s Analysis
Ok, I’m calling it now. This is the first game where Iowa’s doesn’t allow 3-point shooters to go nuts on them. I see the Hawkeyes coming out, mixing up the defenses, pressing more, and ultimately getting out and guarding the perimeter. It’s an audacious call on my part, but I think it happens. The real concern is seeing if Iowa is able to avoid falling into a defensive lull against the Princeton-style offense of the Wildcats. Cartwright should be able to contain Juice; May should be able to contain Crawford. Shurna is the guy that will need the most attention from behind the arc.
I really expect Iowa’s offensive rebounding to improve in this game, as well. Going up against Northwestern’s zone will allow Iowa to attack the boards on offense. Look for more second chance points for Iowa in this one.
KEYS TO GAME FOR IOWA:
- Defend the Three. Yep. This key is here again and for good reason.
- Put a Body into Shurna. John is coming off a small injury that still is hampering him a little bit. Even before the injury he was soft, so Iowa needs to put a body on him and not allow him to get to his spots. Last year Drew Crawford came into the game firing on all cylinders and Eric May shut him down, it will be interesting if someone from Iowa steps up against Shurna.
- Pass the Ball Effectively. To beat the zone you either have to slash or pass. Iowa is built more to pass at this point in the program. The Hawkeyes need to be smart with the ball and make the extra pass when they need to.
- Make the Bunnies. It’s college basketball. You can’t leave 10+ points on the floor by missing the bunnies. It’s just unacceptable and Iowa needs to shore this up.
PREDICTION: Northwestern is soft team; Iowa needs to play tough and enforce their will. The Hawkeye bigs will be huge in this game. I expect Iowa to close out on the 3-point shooters and use the home crowd advantage to come out with the win.
FINAL SCORE: Iowa 73, Northwestern 67
