Iowa vs. Illinois St. Score predictions

Our defense will have it's hands full that's for sure. They lost 3 of 5 on the OL...but they aren't green replacements and they have some size up front (330lb guards). Where they are weak is in the DL and they are undersized at LB and corner. My guess is that this shapes up as a ball control / clock control Ferentz type of game...or that's what we want anyway. I like our chances as I think our RB's will be much better...and play action with CJ is going to stretch the field.

If we can run the ball and pound this thing and have success...we win if we don't turn it over. I think our D will get stops...and we just need to convert the opportunities. It will be interesting to see how Boone and Ike do in the running game...and if it's positive...it's a clear advantage for Iowa.

Iowa 24 Illinois st 17 From what I seen last year this is a pretty talented team coming into Kinnick. They look to have some speed on the edges and anyone who watches Iowa FB knows that defensive speed is not our strong point.

Defensive speed, most games, wasn't our problem last season. Poor pursuit angles, lack of ability to read-react and atrocious tackling? Yes.

It was as bad as I have ever seen it in the KF era. They have lacked talent and/or experience before, but never has the fundamentals been so sloppy and inconsistent as they were last year. They were out of position to make tackles, to make plays. One of the reasons why I think the defense will be better this year is because they will clean some of that up. I think PP and the defensive coaching staff made it a point of emphasis in the off season and going into fall camp.

The DE(s) have to play well. Ott will be fine......Meier on other hand. At times last year he was just simply overwhelmed. He is bigger, stronger and more experienced this year I guess we will see what happens. The DE(s) funnel everything to inside and hopefully you get better tackling from the back 7 than you did last year.

17-13 bad guys, we have a 13-10 lead in the final 5 minutes of the game and punt from their 40 then give up a 4:30 second drive in which they convert 2 4th downs on QB scrambles.

Iowa 23 Illinois St. 20

I am taking Iowa, but I can easily see this scenario playing out. It is not like we have seen it a million times before.

Iowa will struggle to move the ball thinks to Derp Davis and Ferentz, and our porous defense won't be able to contain the D2 juggernaut's offense. I'm afraid this is going to be a very long, dark season.

With Montana's win over #1 North Dakota St. yesterday, Illinois St will most likely be ranked #1 in the FCS when they come to Kinnick Saturday.

Not too familiar with the Redbirds but I'm going 27-10 Hawkeyes with a late touchdown from IL St when the game is already won. I think our defense will be too much for them (particularly pass defense) and CJB will air it out early getting Kinnick fired up. Whoever is blocking Ott will cry.

One of the reasons I think the back 7 will be better is...because the LBs can't possibly be worse. Spearman was addition by subtraction.
