Iowa v Indiana Game thread

Awesome win. With 8 minutes to go I didn't see that one happening. A few of those tips looked like they could go in.

holy #@$@#$@#$@#^$#^^$@%$@#&%^^( we got lucky
So did we get lucky on that 12-0 run? How about when May stole the ball and pushed it up for the Hawks to go up? How about the D they played down the stretch? Have you ever watched a game before? They went out and won it.

That shot Cartwright hit in the final minute, which gave us the lead for good was studly. I know we don't get him for long but I hope he does stuff like that the rest of the time we have him.

It was a bit ugly, but it's a huge win for this program. It actually feels like the program is finally starting to turn things around.

Coach Crean just said that they had every excuse imaginable but the aren't going to use them. Exactly what excuse would that be? That they didn't pay the referees enough? He just said Todd Lickliter should get credit for this win???? WTF is he on?

Wow- what a tool. Lickliter wouldn't have let these kids play and without Basabe where would this game have been? And was Cartwright a Lick recruit or a McCaff guy? That one I don't know... Bringing up Coach Lickliter? Really? No ill will towards Coach Lick, but this is the first time Iowa has won back to back Big Ten games in four years. How many years was Lick there? I rest my case.

If Crean said Lick should get credit I would be pi$$ed. Our two best players were Cartwright and Basabe both Fran's guys. Also Fran's coaching job this season has been impressive. We are much better than the team that lost to South Dakota State.

Focusing on our team though -- we had GREAT composure. I had pretty much given up when we were down 58-48 but we played smart and came back. This is a big, big win for Iowa

I used to like Crean but he's becoming more and more unlikeable. There should be no excuses when you lose to what was the last place team in conference at home. Crean , we just swept you and are 5-1 against your team since you came here, even in our horrible state. Shut up.

I wont be able to host the chat or participate in this thread, but you guys have fun.

I do plan on being in Iowa City for the UM and the PU games, though, if all works out.

I did not get a preview/predictions up either.

Quick and Dirty -
Indiana is playing out of their mind lately. Beat a couple very good teams. Doing it without their top 3 scorers. Iowa destroyed them in Iowa City and Watford had the bulk of their points (now injured). If Hawks can contain Hulls from the outside, I think they can get their first and likely only roadie win today. Worried about how well Indiana has played lately - they are stepping up on heart and effort alone. The crowd will be rocking in Assembly Hall too, so that will be tough for Iowa. They need to get a lead in this one and keep it to take out the crowd. Iowa does have more talent than Indiana with their injuries - but, again, Indiana has beaten better teams than Iowa with this lineup.

I think Basabe goes crazy in this one - 24 pts, 14 rebs. Cartwright adds 16 pts, 9 assists

Iowa 73 - Indiana 68

First and only road win in the Big Ten for Iowa.

Basabe 20 and 13.
Cartwright 15 and 8.

That's pretty crazy to have those two almost hit exactly what I predicted. Very crazy.

Indiana guys sticking together is all. They all LOVED Lick and you know why. He was the sad sack on the bench no one had to worry about.

Here's the odd thing about bringing up Lickliter, Basabe and Cartwright (two biggest players in the game) were McCaffery recruits. Gatens and Cole were Alford recruits.

And Brommer/Archie are guys that Lick brought in and did nothing to develop. Both are now able to contribute not just in OOC play, but against Big Ten teams. The credit for that goes to Fran.

As usual, most of you are way overreacting to this statement. His excuse is that they do not have the horses to compete in the Big Ten right now due to all the injuries they have experienced. Their by far best 2 players are out with injury. Imagine if Basabe and Cartwright were injured right now, that is what IU is facing. They were undersized down low and it showed. His comment about Lickliter was that he brought in several of these players (which is true), but the 2 that really led us to victory yesterday is a direct result of Fran, so my guess is that he and Todd developed some sort of friendship and he is sticking up for his friend.

I met Tom Crean at the Final 4 in San Antonio in 2008 just after he took the IU job. He took the time to take a picture with me even though I'm an Iowa fan. I talked to him about how my boss is a huge Marquette fan and he said it was a very difficult decision for him to leave Marquette and that IU was one of a very few places he would have left for. He's a class act and he'll (unfortunately) have that program back on track in a year or two.
