Iowa Underclassmen Discuss NFL Draft

We read his post differently and I was laying out a different scenario.

It seems like me saying I view his scenario as being from a fan's perspective, it pushed your hot button. That's how I read it. That's my opinion.

Is it a tough decision to make in this scenario?

I could see Stone going in the 5th or 6th round if he leaves early. I could also see him being a first team all B1G safety next year and going in the 2nd or 3rd round with a much bigger signing bonus if he waits a year.

In it, where is the downside in coming back?

We as fans have to remember that many of these players are going to apply for this just to receive feedback. If it turns out they may have played themselves into a round 1,2 or 3 selection, then a decision has to be made. It's now business and playing up to a rd 1,2 or 3 is a larger initial contract. Falling below that may mean coming back for another year to work and improve, hoping to move up the next year. Much of it for underclassman is information gathering.

Guys leaving early is NOT ALL bad for the entire football program either. It shows recruits that players are developing and performing well in the program. Obviously, the team is having success. In the end can be another recruiting topic to sell. Not all bad at all.

Fourth rounders get $800K signing bonus.

It worked out for Hooker and A Nelson last year, both of whom went in that round and are playing for their respective teams this season.

It really is a decision to be made by each individual and his family. Each case is unique in its own way.

Again, we processed the post differently. He offered a scenario for coming back. I offered a counter point.

And as someone who monitors these boards and social media accounts and hears from a lot of the Iowa fans daily, I would not say all of the fans weigh the injury risk evenly with the desire to see these kids return.
I don't disagree with your counterpoint Rob. The injury factor is always there. My point is I think he is one of those guys that could actually move up a couple of rounds in the draft after another year and that translates in to a lot of dollars, so there is two sides to the financial risk. He would most likely be the best safety in the B1G next year, maybe even the best defensive player period. I could see him going in the 2nd or 3rd round in that scenario. He's probably a 5th or 6th rounder this year unless he does something crazy at the combine. Again, tough decision, but a good problem to have. ;)

What does a 2nd rounder get for signing?

Hock and Fant are in good shape. ;)

A Nelson picked up $772K, Hooker got $733 in signing bonus plus they've secured this year's salary and are working towards contract No. 2.

Everyone has to realize that an 18 year old with a high school diploma or GED who makes $25/hr or $50000 a year will make $1 million in 20 years plus about 2% cost of living increase, so maybe $1.1 million.

Many of these people will be making at best $15 an hour or $30,000 a year or $600,000 in 20 years. This group of workers is working 40 years to make about $1.3 million.

From a purely monetary point of view a $775,000 bonus and even one years NFL pay at rookie rate, not sure what that is, but let's say another $700,000 will have made $1.5 million at age 21 or 22. They can have the bonus spread out in yearly payments to lessen taxes, etc etc. How many seasons does it take to get vested into the NFL pension?

With smart investments these players can be set for life and work later years in what they want to do to bolster their finances.

A player who plays 3 years in college has worked a lot or if they redshirt a year and then play 2 or 3 years and leave early they still have worked a lot. Unless they want to play that last year with their teammates and love the college experience and definitely want to graduate then those in top draft positions might surely lean to go pro.

Thanks for the link Rob. Interesting data. If I could do everything over again, I would strive to be a sports agent.

Interesting to see the difference between the last pick in the 1st round and the first pick in the 2nd round.
