spank, is there a way you can let Herby back in just for this thread only and block him from the rest of the website?

also, spank, i could really use your knowledge in the HN best hawkeye player thread. TIA.

That's not fair to Gabe

Do you know how Gabe feels about a possible redshirt next year? Didn't think so.

You never know, maybe he'd like to have an extra year for development. I think there would be a lot of positives to redshirting him, but there's a lot of negatives as well. And a lot of it depends on how good Meyer is.

Another year to develop may be what it takes to make his head catch up with his league ready body. It could be unfair to Gabe not redshirting him. Just saying.

I agree. I also agree that we play him if he's needed. Wow, I should run for political office...just landed on both sides of the argument. We have 2 front court players coming off of redshirt seasons. If Gabe is clearly better and those 2 aren't bringing much to the table then play Gabe. If they have some game and 10 fouls to give then redshirt Gabe...assuming the coaches and players are in agreement. I thought some of the rumblings were that Gabe wanted the redshirt next year...

For Hawk 33...None were true perimeter passes. Many coaches today emphasize closeout over blocking (some don't even put the hand out anymore in lieu of a hand in the chest to take away the landing). Many of the blocks were an undersized shooter against a taller defender. The shooter should not have been in the position to score. Those could have been about 9 fouls on a given night.

Fun and fun for fans. Shows more fight. Listening to Groce before the game he probably hyped to his players how tall Iowa was. IL didn't go up strong a number of times. Told you they don't like scrums.

This was a scrum

Marble at PG really creates problems for many teams.

Easy there, brah. I was talking about pulling his redshirt halfway through the season like Sioux mentioned, not just him redshirting.

Uthoff is not a front court player. In fact, both Meyer and Uthoff have more perimeter oriented games.

i really think we'll need Gabe for next year if we are going to make some noise and get into the Dance.

Gabe took huge steps last night and the season isn't done yet. He was a huge contributor. If he can continue that development the next several weeks, over the summer and next fall, Iowa is going to need him big time in 2013-2014. No way you sit him for a year.

Understood but adding Meyer, Jok and Uthoff to the current 9 player rotation puts it at 12. There's no way 12 guys are getting minutes. This doesn't even include Ingram. There are going to be some unhappy guys if no one redshirts because at least 11 of these guys should be getting minutes and possibly/probably more.

Will Meyer, Jok or Uthoff be more ready than Gabe to go through the grind like this year?

Gabe may be raw, but he's improving.

He's also a known commodity.

Not sure you can say that about the other three.

While I agree that Gabe had a good game last night, there is still plenty of room for improvement. At one point, my teenage daughter actually yelled at the screen "what the heck is Gabe doing now?" He got out of position, and actually screened Clemmons off his man as the Illini ball handler drove toward the hoop. I still think it would be a wise move to redshirt Gabe next season and let him continue to learn the game. I think it would pay off very nicely in the following two years. Once Gabes knowledge catches up to his physical ability, he will be a real force in the game.

No way he gets redshirted next year but I wish he would for all the reasons you listed.

Could you imagine a polished Woodbury and Olaseni starting together as Seniors?

The coaches will know if the other guys can get it done. We can't leave too many good players sitting on the bench watching. If it's a wash or we lose just a little I think the redshirt will be given serious consideration. Also, we don't have to turn in paperwork. If sitting him is clearly a mistake put a uniform on him and get him in there after the first 3 or 4 games.

It's not going to be "clearly a mistake" after 3 or 4 games, it might be clearly a mistake when we're in Columbus or East Lansing in January or February and Woody is in foul trouble and I'm having 2011-12 flashbacks watching McCabe and Basabe try to hang in at the 5 spot while Iowa is getting destroyed on the boards.

I think Iowa could be very good next season and I would rather not redshirt Gabe as he provides a quality back up to Adam which we will need in B10 play.
