That's not fair to Gabe
Another year to develop may be what it takes to make his head catch up with his league ready body. It could be unfair to Gabe not redshirting him. Just saying.
Do you know how Gabe feels about a possible redshirt next year? Didn't think so.
You never know, maybe he'd like to have an extra year for development. I think there would be a lot of positives to redshirting him, but there's a lot of negatives as well. And a lot of it depends on how good Meyer is.
I agree. I also agree that we play him if he's needed. Wow, I should run for political office...just landed on both sides of the argument. We have 2 front court players coming off of redshirt seasons. If Gabe is clearly better and those 2 aren't bringing much to the table then play Gabe. If they have some game and 10 fouls to give then redshirt Gabe...assuming the coaches and players are in agreement. I thought some of the rumblings were that Gabe wanted the redshirt next year...

GO HAWKS!!!
Uthoff is not a front court player. In fact, both Meyer and Uthoff have more perimeter oriented games.
Understood but adding Meyer, Jok and Uthoff to the current 9 player rotation puts it at 12. There's no way 12 guys are getting minutes. This doesn't even include Ingram. There are going to be some unhappy guys if no one redshirts because at least 11 of these guys should be getting minutes and possibly/probably more.
While I agree that Gabe had a good game last night, there is still plenty of room for improvement. At one point, my teenage daughter actually yelled at the screen "what the heck is Gabe doing now?" He got out of position, and actually screened Clemmons off his man as the Illini ball handler drove toward the hoop. I still think it would be a wise move to redshirt Gabe next season and let him continue to learn the game. I think it would pay off very nicely in the following two years. Once Gabes knowledge catches up to his physical ability, he will be a real force in the game.
Will Meyer, Jok or Uthoff be more ready than Gabe to go through the grind like this year?
Gabe may be raw, but he's improving.
He's also a known commodity.
Not sure you can say that about the other three.
I miss Herby.
The coaches will know if the other guys can get it done. We can't leave too many good players sitting on the bench watching. If it's a wash or we lose just a little I think the redshirt will be given serious consideration. Also, we don't have to turn in paperwork. If sitting him is clearly a mistake put a uniform on him and get him in there after the first 3 or 4 games.
