Micheal Payne was also the first one who came to my mind. As Greg Stokes got better, Payne regressed into mediocrity. Makes you wonder what Payne's career would have been like if Stokes was never around.

I would also put Roy Marble, Sr on the list. Yes he had a great Iowa career, but you always felt he was destined for much more. Then he kinda fizzled out in the pros. BJ Armstrong, Kevin Gamble, Brad Lohhaus all were Iowa teammates that ended up with better NBA careers than Marble.

What's the logic behind this? It's not a zero sum game where if one player improves another can't. Quite the contrary.

I'm late to this thread and I'm a little surprised Glen Worley hadn't been mentioned. He was a pretty highly thought of recruit who's freshman season seemed like the best one he had at Iowa where he regressed every yr after. I might be hyperbolizing that but he just never improved his game. 6'7-6'8 kid that couldn't jump over a phone book. Fouled like crazy. He could shoot a little bit but just wasn't athletic enough for D1 BIG Hoops of that era and due to all his fouling he couldn't ever play big mins just due to that. It seemed like he had 2 or 3 fouls in the first half of every game he played.

Was it one of those Big Ten basketballs you used to be able to get at Hardee's??? Those things were awesome and everyone in the neighborhood seemed to have one. Better times, man, better times.

Wait...never mind those didn't come out till the early 90s. My bad...

Yeah, was just some Wilson basketball I had at home. Or maybe Spalding. I can't remember, that was 40 years go.

Along that same vein his bro too. CM became a decent role player but for what high rankings he came in with he didn't meet those expectations either.

I liked PMac because I admired his heart

Coming back from serious surgery

And I cheered the threes he would occasionally make and some were very timely

Connor played a role that wasn't appreciated by many

He played very good D and had the knack of getting into the heads of the opponents

He was constantly talking to them, infuriating them and causing them to foul him

He and Jordan were terrors on the line, pay the price for committing foul on them

Both PMac and Connor were savvy players and had excellent floor games

Connor and Caitlin are my favorite couple
