Iowa OL Wins Joe Moore Award

"many of the voters felt Iowa personified the fundamental principle that drives this award: Teamwork. Iowa excelled in that this season.”"

Former offensive line coaches and linemen vote for the award. They judge toughness, effort, teamwork, consistency, technique and prowess at finishing blocks.

Having two excellent running backs with completely different running styles, who could alternate at will didn't hurt anything either.

I love the run blocking, but we struggled to pass block it seemed. I trust the people that voted for this know much more than I do though.

I get that their technique as individuals is probably decent. But it definitely didn't show on the field too often. The NE game probably helped perception a bit as we ran all over them.

Here is how Iowa finished in the Big10 for Offense

12th in Total Offense -- (Only Illinois and Rutgers were worse)
8th in Rush Offense
13th in Pass Offense -- (Rutgers 14th)
10th in Sacks Against
12th in First Downs
11th in 3rd Down Conversions
1st in Red Zone Offense

This seems to fall in line with KF history on this side of the ball.

Gave up 29 sacks which was 90th in the FBS, but part of that can be attributed to Beathard not having open targets this year and the fact that he's not a mobile guy.

One thing is for sure; the Iowa OL is going to have some expectations to fill. Agree?
I'm in favor of a Wadley/Toks one-two punch like this year, augmented by Vandeberg, Fant, and Wieting actually giving us receiving threats.

All eyes on you, Nathan Stanley.

Do not give this program expectations. KF doesn't manage them well. He wants slow and steady progress. 7-5 should be the outlook every year. Barta agrees

As I posted above, every year Iowa seems to finish around the same location in Big10 offense numbers, no matter if we have stud RB or a stud QB

Well...that Award is basically a blind draw. Last time I looked, an offensive line was required to protect the QB. Sure 29 sacks, but if Beathard threw 300 times, he was hurried on 200 of them. That's the craziest thing I've ever seen...and a laughing stock.

Well, good for Iowa, but I can't see how any Iowa fan or fan in general can agree that Iowa had the nation's top offensive line. Let the speculation begin that this is a ploy to bolster Brian's resume....

Protecting the QB in the passing game involves the blocking of tight ends, running backs, and the quarterback getting rid of the ball also. None of which figures into this award. The guys who watch just the line, and don't count coverage sacks, sacks given up by TE's and RB's, and by the QB not having a good internal clock, chose Iowa as the best Oline. I think this award this year is two things: 1. its a combined homage to Oline U, 2. its a sign that like many of us thought, CJ was holding the ball A LOT this year instead of taking chances.

There's definitely some truth in what you say, however, there were several times, actual offensive linemen missed blocks that led to sacks. I'm not saying the core of the OL sucked by any means, but they certainly were not the nation's best OL. The fact that not one single lineman made either the 1st or 2nd all B1G team should count for a little something, unless you think the all B1G teams are mostly political decisions, yet all the other awards are not?...

Getting awards is always nice. I will say Brian is living the charmed life his father lived. Would seem more fitting for last year's O-line, but hey, good news for this season is welcome.

Time to take these awards and trophies and finish off the recruiting class with a flourish. And then use said same awards/trophies to kick-start next year's recruiting.

Recruiting is overrated. snort snort

Wow that is an awesome looking trophy. Congrats linemen. That's what Iowa is mostly famous for. Now lets use this thing to our advantage!

Overheard in the Joe Moore Award Committee after the award announcement, "They played Northwestern? We didn't see that tape." I'm pretty sure the NW DE wasn't being blocked by a back or TE. Hey, I'm happy for the guys, because it does show these guys can play...and they handled things well over the last three, that's for sure. The great news...everyone starting in that Nebraska game is coming back and we have depth. That's a pretty solid group returning.
