The last time these two teams took the court, the Wildcats were 16-7 and staring down their first ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes came out and took it to Northwestern from start to finish, putting together arguably their best and most complete game of the year. Although NW was able to get a win at home against Minnesota the next time out, the loss to Iowa was a back-breaker of sorts. Since then, the Wildcats have lost at home to Penn State and on the road to Wisconsin. Their dreams of making their first ever March Madness appearance have been completely dismantled. This game should serve as a payback game for the Wildcats. They were severely embarrassed by the Hawkeyes in their previous meeting.
For a team that has a chance to lose the most games in the history of the program, morale actually seems to be pretty good around this Hawkeye team. When the transfer question came up this week, the players and coaches seemed to think everyone would be back that was expected back. Despite a gut-wrenching loss in OT to Michigan eight days ago, this Iowa team is not giving up. The guys are not lying down. They are not finished.
I am looking forward to seeing what type of defense Carmody has his guys in tonight. Their 1-3-1 has been borderline suicidal all year long, yet he still finds it necessary to throw it in at times during the game. Iowa made him pay last game. If Carmody decides to go zone again in this one, he needs to go straight back to coaching school.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Shurna. He put up some monster numbers against Wisconsin even though he had some foul trouble to deal with. I really like Iowa’s matchups against him, though. He’s not physical by any means (who on NW really is?). He’ll get his points, but he’s not going to be a game-changer.
Juice. He’s capable of doing so many things, the problem for Northwestern is he hasn’t been doing them lately. Could be in line for a breakout game vs. Iowa. He played 40 minutes last time vs. the Hawks, I expect the same thing this time.
Crawford. Drew sort of got into Carmody’s doghouse early in the last contest against Iowa. He only played about 20 minutes and put up just 5 points. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Crawford put up more than 5 in this one. That said, it certainly looks like he might have hit the proverbial “freshman wall” these past few weeks.
KEYS TO THE GAME:

  • FULLER AND COLE. Let’s face it, Iowa is not going to shoot 12-24 from three point land inside Welch-Ryan like they did in CHA vs NW. Northwestern’s interior defense has been awful (READ: AWFUL) as of late. Fuller is really coming on, and Jarryd Cole is automatic down low. Cully, as well as the wings, need to find these two early and often.
  • GATENS IS GOLD. I’d love to see Matt come out of the block on fire. When he does, good things happen for Iowa. When he doesn’t, it seems like the team struggles.
  • DEFENSE. Yes, Iowa shot insane last game vs. the Wildcats, but they won the game because of their defense (especially in the second half). Look for tough, physical D by Iowa to really affect NW once again.
As the Iowa Sports Information points out, this will be the 2,500th game played by the Iowa Hawkeyes. I don’t know what sort of significance that holds in the grand scheme of things, but I’d certainly like to see that game go in the books as a win.
PREDICTION: Quite simply… if Penn State can beat NW at home, so can Iowa. Iowa 62, Northwestern 60

NW has lost 3 of 4...and their dreams of dancing are dashed. Shurna is gimpy. Iowa surprises them 59-57. Look out for luka...he is a sneaky serb...muscle him Jarryd!

I have a really good feeling about this game for some reason. That is most likely not a good thing. Plus i cant believe the spread is 9 - Iowa seems like an obvious pick. Anytime there is an obvious pick i get nervous. BUT, we kicked their *** once and i think we do it again. 60-52 Hawks

I'm trying to decide if the 9 day layoff will have them focused and fresh or rusty and inconsistent.

I will predict a three point win for the Hawks. But definitely wouldn't put money on it.

Well stormin....looking at the Pomeroy and RPI...we are 193 to 92 and 141 to 70, how long has it been since we were that polar opposite of NWU???? I think the last game vs NWU was a fluke...we have not shot the ball that well all season long. Granted they haven't played great bball since the last game. However, they beat Minnesota and really could of easily beat Wisconsin in a game I watched. SO they aren't playing as poorly as some suggest. Shurna banged up a little, he will play and much like Gatens it will not be real noticeable. I think Carmody is a very solid coach...I think he easily out thinks Lick and comes up with some good man to man defense and some tweaks to the 1-3-1...I thought the 1-3-1 against Wisky looked very solid, really forced them way outside. Also look for some 3/4 court pressure or even 1/2 court pressure with some traps. Really surprising more teams have not done this to Iowa. It is a nationally televised game and they will be up. Iowa has had 9 days off and any coach at any level will tell you that is NOT GOOD this time of year. Nothing substitutes playing this time of year...Pitino spoke about this the other night on their game versus Georgetown. So I think this spells doom for the Hawks...look for the game to be 31-28 NW at half time and the Hawks fall apart in the 2nd half behind miserable shooting. NW 70-52...hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

Really? Because Lickliter schooled him in CHA last time out.

Lets be honest here. Coaches rarely "school" other coaches, especially when its Iowa vs NW. The difference in the last game was NW shot 8-26 (30%) from 3 and Iowa was 12-24. Thats the ball game right there. Whichever team shoots better from distance is going to win. I dont think that has much to do with in game strategy.

However you want to go about it... Iowa's gameplan was far superior to NW's last time out. Lick > Carmody. loess was saying Carmody outcoached Lick, which is simply just false.

True - Loess says a lot of things, and usually those thoughts are not separated by anything except...

No what I meant was Carmody will outdo Lick this game. Did Lick out coach him last time>???? Up for debate, I will give you one here Stormin. Just gave my preview...isn't that what you asked for in the OP? Let's see yours???

Lick outcoached Carmody. Wow!! Let's puff out the chest a bit more...lol

I will wait for the time when Lick outcoaches a team and a coach that matters...

I just don't see Iowa winning tonight.
