The last time these two teams took the court, the Wildcats were 16-7 and staring down their first ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes came out and took it to Northwestern from start to finish, putting together arguably their best and most complete game of the year. Although NW was able to get a win at home against Minnesota the next time out, the loss to Iowa was a back-breaker of sorts. Since then, the Wildcats have lost at home to Penn State and on the road to Wisconsin. Their dreams of making their first ever March Madness appearance have been completely dismantled. This game should serve as a payback game for the Wildcats. They were severely embarrassed by the Hawkeyes in their previous meeting.
For a team that has a chance to lose the most games in the history of the program, morale actually seems to be pretty good around this Hawkeye team. When the transfer question came up this week, the players and coaches seemed to think everyone would be back that was expected back. Despite a gut-wrenching loss in OT to Michigan eight days ago, this Iowa team is not giving up. The guys are not lying down. They are not finished.
I am looking forward to seeing what type of defense Carmody has his guys in tonight. Their 1-3-1 has been borderline suicidal all year long, yet he still finds it necessary to throw it in at times during the game. Iowa made him pay last game. If Carmody decides to go zone again in this one, he needs to go straight back to coaching school.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Shurna. He put up some monster numbers against Wisconsin even though he had some foul trouble to deal with. I really like Iowa’s matchups against him, though. He’s not physical by any means (who on NW really is?). He’ll get his points, but he’s not going to be a game-changer.
Juice. He’s capable of doing so many things, the problem for Northwestern is he hasn’t been doing them lately. Could be in line for a breakout game vs. Iowa. He played 40 minutes last time vs. the Hawks, I expect the same thing this time.
Crawford. Drew sort of got into Carmody’s doghouse early in the last contest against Iowa. He only played about 20 minutes and put up just 5 points. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Crawford put up more than 5 in this one. That said, it certainly looks like he might have hit the proverbial “freshman wall” these past few weeks.
KEYS TO THE GAME:
PREDICTION: Quite simply… if Penn State can beat NW at home, so can Iowa. Iowa 62, Northwestern 60

KEYS TO THE GAME:
- FULLER AND COLE. Let’s face it, Iowa is not going to shoot 12-24 from three point land inside Welch-Ryan like they did in CHA vs NW. Northwestern’s interior defense has been awful (READ: AWFUL) as of late. Fuller is really coming on, and Jarryd Cole is automatic down low. Cully, as well as the wings, need to find these two early and often.
- GATENS IS GOLD. I’d love to see Matt come out of the block on fire. When he does, good things happen for Iowa. When he doesn’t, it seems like the team struggles.
- DEFENSE. Yes, Iowa shot insane last game vs. the Wildcats, but they won the game because of their defense (especially in the second half). Look for tough, physical D by Iowa to really affect NW once again.
PREDICTION: Quite simply… if Penn State can beat NW at home, so can Iowa. Iowa 62, Northwestern 60
