Iowa is new No. 1 in Top 25 - CBS Sports

Iowa is very good, but #1 in the nation?

If you are not loaded with McDonalds All-Americans you pretty much have to be built the way Iowa is to be really good. It is just the era of college basketball that we are in. Who is significantly better than Iowa right now?

This year is interesting because you don't have a Kentucky or Duke who is absolutely loaded and clearly head and shoulders above everyone else.

I noticed that they didn't have Indiana ranked. Will they be ranked in one of the major polls when we play them on Thursday?

If we beat Indiana Thursday there's a really good chance we see number 1 at some point this year. After the Maryland game I said I was curious to see how we play against bad teams. Turns out we can beat them by double digits even when we shoot bad. That makes me pretty confident there will be no bad loses this year.

So like I said, beat Indiana and we don't play another team that's even average until the last 4 games of the year ( 3 games if you don't count Wisconsin at home). That buys us 2 weeks of hoping Maryland and Villanova lose to make us number 1. I really think it happens if we win Thursday.

Could be.

Villanova looks to have a manageable schedule until @Xavier later this month. Ditto for MD until they play @PU later in the month as well. We'll see what happens Thursday, but after that, it'll be interesting to see who can hang on to the #1 slot, or who can climb up to it.

#2 is great, but would love to see #1 - purely from a "status" standpoint. Anything that helps get the IOWA name out there to recruits. But, a #1 seed may do that as well. Not that this season hasn't been great pub - SI covers, etc.

1. Golden State

2. San Antonio

3. ????

We need Kansas and Oklahoma to lose a couple of more times than Hawks to knock them out of #1 seeds possibilities in midwest. If the Hawks keep this up, who else would keep them from #1 or #2 seed in Chicago regional?

Xavier?

Until we beat them Maryland should be ranked ahead of us.

What does that make the top 5 then?

1) Maryland
2) Iowa State
3) Notre Dame
4) Dayton
5) Iowa

Since those are the 4 that beat Iowa I guess those are the top 4. Yet Kansas and Texas A & M and Baylor beat ISU so they should be ahead of ISU which pushes Iowa back even further. Maryland lost some games so that pushes Iowa back more, etc, etc...Your idea is a good one if there wasn't so much parity this year. Iowa right now is better than Maryland and ISU. Just because you beat a team doesn't mean you are better it just means you scored more points on that day. I know a few sane ISU fans that admit even though they beat Iowa that they aren't better than Iowa. Maryland has some pieces better than Iowa pieces but as a whole I would say Iowa is better. In fact I would say in 10 games Iowa would win 7 of them.

I'd say:

1) UNC Asheville
2) Loyola (Ill)
3) UNI
4) ISU
5) Iowa

Totally agree with what you said in the rest of your post. If we're higher than them in the same conference AND played a tougher conference schedule AND non-conference schedule, and are higher than them in the conference, you can make the argument that we could be ranked higher.

Until we beat them Maryland should be ranked ahead of us.

I know they own the head to head over us, but by that logic, ISU's football team team should've been ranked ahead of Iowa in 2002, just because they beat us - which we all know, is of course, utter nonsense. Should PSU be ranked ahead of Indiana?

Just doesn't work that way. Anything can happen on any given day and one game doesn't override everything else.

Ok I get it,don't beat me up to bad.Lol.
This team is fun to watch reminds me of the Ronnie Lester days.Let's beat Indiana which won't be easy but this team just doesn't get rattled.Go Hawks

No worries gramps - MD definitely does deserve a high ranking, though. They're good.

Can somebody explain how CBS does their ranking? What makes their rankings so different than the others?

It's just one guy or a small group of people (not sure which) where as the AP and coaches are a point system with a bunch of different people picking a top 25. The CBS poll having us number 1 is no different than the 11 people in the AP having us number 1.

"No different?" The CBS poll sounds quite different from the AP poll. And this explains the wide variance for lots of teams.

Maybe I'm not understanding your post but it makes no sense in response to mine. I explained the difference in my post.

I understood and appreciated the explanation of the difference. I didn't understand your conclusion that the difference was "no difference."

Edit: Never mind. Now I see that you were referring to the 11 AP voters who voted for Iowa as #1, not that the AP only has 11 voters.

Gotcha. Yea that would have sounded stupid without that part.
