Iowa is going to struggle...

In the half court O when Gessel rests. There is a very big drop off between him and Clemons. Clemons has a very nice frame, and looms strong enough right now. Hes going to be a capable on ball defender from day one. But Iowa didn't do anything onO when he was running the point. I think we see Marble playing some pooint still this season.

Great points Duff. I agree.

What recent Iowa PG wouldn't be a big drop off. I wasn't going with the hype as much as most. But after watching today, I think this kid is a complete freaking program changer, ala Jimmer, Steph Curry, etc. If teams sag, he is going to drain threes, if they get in his face, he is going by them. When the help comes, he will find the open guy.

Sure, there will be a drop-off, but does it even matter?

Agreed. Iowa hasn't had a point guard this good since Horner. Granted, it's an exhibition, but he's got a very well-rounded and polished game.

The thing about Clemmons is that he was not the primary ball handler for his high school team, that was Denzel Valentine who is a freshman at MSU. The one thing I noticed when I watched him play was he had some Cartwright in him with his descision making. He looks every bit of a PG, but he has some learning to do, but he has all the ability to do so. That said, I don't think Marble plays a whole lot of PG, if any this season...I think it would be a crucial game and Gesell is fouled out and Anthony is struggling. He just needs to learn how to play within an offense as their high school team played a very sloppy style ball with little organization becuase they had so much talent they were never contested...looked a lot like AAU ball.

Yeah, it's not really the competition, it is the fact that he has all phases of the game. Horner is a good comparison, but MG seems to have a quicker release. Jeff had a smooth shot, but it wasn't a quick release, so he needed a little more room. He would kind of lull guys to sleep by distributing and then when the guys sagged, he would launch his shot. Of course Jeff is taller.

And yes, I do think MG is a program changer. He had the stats to indicate that coming in, but I just hadn't had a chance to see all the facets of the game yet.

How is Gesell's defense? It sounds like he is going to be a good one for you, but many times young players struggle defensively for a while until they develop. Any thoughts here?

The "soft" pre-season schedule will be helpful for the young guys. Notice I didn't say easy, that bit me in the arse with the football team.

He looked pretty good today....granted we were playing Quincy.

I agree but not used to see you full Pfizer praise and excitement :)

I think Gesel will struggle some on D. Especially against stronger players. I think he will be very good in the press on D.

Gessel is a MUCH better offensive player than Horner. Hes going to be better off the dribble and hes going to be a better shooter.

In Clemmons defense he wasn't on the floor at the same time as Marble or White who are the best half court players we have.

Agree with your points. Gesell doesn't have to be a great defender, just good enough to stay in the way of people, that is where Iowa's new size comes into play. I have the same feeling this year about how good Gesell is as I thought Trey Burke was going to be, I hope I am 2 for 2 in predictions.

Please give us some more of your incredible insight!!!
