Iowa is #15 in the new coaches poll

Honestly, what have people seen in Florida that makes them a top 12 team? They've looked pretty average for most of the year, and 'Bama beats them by 25, and the Gators only drop 5 spots? At this rate, we'll never make it back into the top 10.

Huh. Color me surprised that we managed to move up 3. Not surprised Florida doesn't drop nearly as far as they deserved to.

Boise St. is not going to the NC game.

Just give it time, next week LSU plays Florida so Iowa will jump the loser of that game, Arizona plays Oregon St, Miami plays Florida St, and Arkansas plays Texas A&M so Iowa could move into the top 10 next week without playing, I don't think they will, but if Iowa keeps winning the ranking will take care of itself.

#15 is about what I expected.. Not bad I guess considering there weren't many losses directly ahead of us.

Yeah, that is absolutely ridiculous that Florida is still ranked ahead of Arkansas. Just plain stupid.

Don't forget that Florida and LSU play next week. If either team drops considerably in the polls, like they should, the game loses it's national appeal. Got to love politics. Fortunately I believe as the season moves on this will benefit us just as much as anyone else. If we keep winning it will works itself out. But honestly, who cares we're only 5 games in.
Depending on what happens next week, we could benefit greatly by potentially playing an undefeated Michigan team that will continue to climb based on name alone.

If the Hawks win out we will be 11-1 ranked top 5 playing in the Rose Bowl against Oregon or someone else? Not bad considering our loss. So the point of this story is just win the rest of our games and we all will be very happy about our ranking.

Very true. It's just kind of a slap in the face to Arkansas I think. If I were them I'd be pi$$ed, but I'd probably be too dumb to be able to use the internets or even read for that matter ;)

Don't forget that the SEC Coaches certainly want other SEC teams that they play to be highly ranked when they play them. With 14 teams, banding together to have a consensus #1 in the conf. and making sure the rest on their schedule are ranked in proper order to assure that upsets get big rises out of the other teams and normal wins also get a big rise in rankings, you get ranking inflation in that conference. Their rankings are self-sustaining.

IMHO, the whole human ranking thing has got to go. Everyone involved in the ranking process has something to gain from certain teams being ranked higher than others, wether that something is selling more ads on the net, getting more revenue in a bowl game, or getting better rankings for their network on television.

There's probably massive collusion going on with NCAA FBS rankings, within conferences and the media, and it may also be influenced by the Vegas sportsbooks. Like steroids in baseball, it is the white elephant in the room that nobody talks about, but someday is going to be discovered by Congress to be the mint for non-profit NCAA FBS schools that it truly is.

We'll all look back at it and realize what fools we were to believe any of this could truly be "fair".

I can understand why programs cheat: if everyone else is cheating, maybe you have to cheat to compete, or risk becoming an NC State or Northwestern.

There are 3 1-loss teams ahead of us. Those teams' losses were to #1 Alabama (2 of them) and #2 Ohio State. I don't see a problem with that.

IowaBanker, I can agree with you on Arkansas (lost a tough one against a dominant Alabama team) and at least see the point on Miami even thought I think Iowa is a better team that has played 1 more game so far. However, Florida just lost this weekend by 25 points, was down 21-0 at one point and looked atrocious in nearly ever facet of the game. Florida deserves to be ranked about 20th right now, not 12th/14th. I would be more upset, but I don't see this Florida team going 12-1 because they will probably lose between 1 and 4 more games in the regular season and would have no chance of beating Alabama in the SEC Championship Game even if they ran the table. Look to them losing to Florida State this week and still being ranked 21st at 4-2.

Iowa will drop 2 spots just for having a bye week, so I wouldn't worry too much about things just yet...there's still a lot of football to be played, starting with the Hawks getting a shot at Denard Robinson...should know if he's just a "flavor of the month" or the real deal after that one.

HawkeyeShane, what are you basing your 2 spot drop on? Here are the ranked teams that had a bye this week:

Arizona (went from 14th/14th to 9th/11th)
Utah (went from 13th/12th to 10th/10th)
Arkansas (went from 15th/15th to 11th/13th)
South Carolina (went from 20th/22nd to 19th/20th)
Missouri (went from 28th/23rd to 24th/22nd)

Every team improved at least 1 spot with the bye and most improved more than 1 spot.

Win out in October and we're back in the top #10.

Seems pretty ridiculous that Iowa has to beat PSU, Mich, MSU, and Wisky all in one month to assure a top 10 ranking...while Florida can lose by 25 and regain the top 10 the following week with a win.
