Brian needs to do the right thing and step down. No probably not now but at the end of the year. Clearly this is not an offense that needs a few tweeks. Young Ferentz has no clue as an offensive coordinator and can't ever be the head coach at Iowa! The players that we have are not as bad as the results on the field shows and that has to be the system! USA today had an article calling Iowa offense inept and brings back memories of the old days when players wore leather on their heads. We are a national story and it is only going to get worse.
Brian has made a bunch of money coaching at Iowa and its time for him to step up and do the right thing
 
It's not going to happen and I think you know this. Doing the "right thing" when you are making a crap load of money goes out the window.
 
I think the poster just above me is likely right. Who is going to walk away from $800K a year. No one in their right mind. So what if your fans don’t want you around it’s $800k a year.

We all know who makes the decision, Brian’s dad, the head coach. Tough spot for a dad to be in. Kirk could retire and leave the defensive coordinator and the program will be fine. The offense would improve. How could it not?

Kirk also has options. Maybe not fire his son. Maybe keep him as a line coach, a tight end coach. He and his family have been given the royal carpet at Iowa. He needs to do what right for the program. Make a change at OC or retire.

Having said that, this is only one game and hopefully improvements will happen. Right now the offense is a train wreck which is a continuation from last season.

In the link below it starts out slow but then Don Patterson joins the show. The older hawk fans know that Don was a former offensive coordinator, whom would put Brian to shame. Don is respectful in his comments, but notes the offense needs an upgrade to be more complex.

Also the fans who call in openly express their opinions (similar to the posters here).

Well Brian did a 3 hour sit down/chalk talk with Dochterman and others this summer. I’m sure he wowed them. And someone 5 years into their profession would wow a HS student with their knowledge
 
I have no reasonable complaints about Kirk until he hired Brian. We used to be middle of the offensively. We are the WORST now.
 
Consider the following scenario...
With every dismal offensive season, and every game like SDSU, Brian's chances for future employment as a coach at any level or capacity become less and less. (It is debatable if he has any prospects at this point)
Kirk realizes this too. Short term, the only option to keep Brian gainfully employed is to hang on as HC (with Brian as OC) longer than he should (to the detriment of the program).
Long term, Brian's failures become the very reason he becomes the next Iowa HC. Kirk realizes Brian has no other coaching career path. He calls in his markers to the boosters and gains their commitment to name Brian as HC to replace him.

While it appears no amount of ineptitude will result in Brian's departure as OC in the near future, what can be done to prevent the Brian as HC scenario?

You are probably right. I only suggested what should happen but consider this. It will be impossible to recruit and retain offensive players into this system. The reality is that the program could go down the tubes and Kirk's legacy goes from a very good coach for 20+ years to a coach that also took the program down. Does Kirk allow that to save his son for a couple years? Does Young Ferentz do that to his father? Again probably

Another legendary coach who now lives in infamy because he refused to do the right thing Joe Paterno. No its not the same level. Nothing could be more disgusting than Papa Joe but his failure cost him his legacy.

That’s an extreme example. I’m done with being a Hawkeye fan if we find out Brian was banging kids in the locker room and it was covered up.
