Iowa Football: What are you looking forward to?

I'm looking forward to seeing what a healthy backfield might look like. Seems like Weisman, Bullock, Canzeri and Daniels have been nicked up in some fashion every step of their careers. With Canzeri getting a chance to be 'the man' I'd REALLY like to see what he could do at 100%. Can it happen? History says no, but you never know. Maybe he breaks out and has a great senior year. Wouldn't that be a great lift for CJB and the offense. A running game? Could you imagine? :)

While I might be wrong here, has it been a few years since Iowa has run into any big time problems with recruits leaving early?

I'm just saying this because we haven't had those 3-4 year guys lately that really develop into special players, and we might actually get to see a couple of them this year.

Without reading the entire thread...I'm looking forward to the day Kirk is no longer coach. I don't believe for a second he can right this program again.

The same I do every season. Beer, brats, steaks, wings, and some football. Win or lose, i'm still a Hawkeye. Rinse and repeat.

Looking forward to:
-Watching CJB at QB
-Watching Daniels/Canzeri/Waddley at RB
-Seeing what WR steps up for us
-Watching the LB crew improve this year

I'll be pumped by the time the season starts. Win or lose, a fall Saturday with Hawkeye football is better than a Saturday without.

I'm hoping CJB can add a few sprinkles to that bowl of vanilla ice cream, but I thought the QB controversy over shadowed some of the more blatant problems they had on defense.

Especially on pass defense. Without mentioning any names. IMO the play at one of the CB positions cost us more games than the QB did. The LBs and SS positions were very average and way to slow. If you can't cover from sideline to sideline in todays game you will not win many games and last year Iowa could not do that.
It was the defining reason why they lost three to four FB games.

IMO, KF better get some speed on the field on the defensive side of the ball or the results are going to be very disappointing for Hawkeye fans.

I'm not excited about anything. I imagine I feel the same way a man in prison feels towards the end of his sentence. I'm counting down the days until the sun shines on Iowa football again. I don't really know how many days I have left on this sentence but I know the end is near. So, I guess I'm excited that the end of KFball is near.

Given the fact that we're approaching year 17 of the Ferentz era any criticism of Iowa's offensive issues directed at Ferentz is hardly "undeserved". I agree that JR never got the benefit of the doubt from fans and I think it's because he never passed the eye test for most fans. JR made playing QB look like really hard work, especially his throwing motion. CJB makes throwing the football look effortless.

I personally gave Rudock the benefit of doubt in the beginning. In fact, his first year, he looked so much better than JVB i don't see how anyone didn't give him the benefit of doubt. If it wasn't for CJ, i would not have any issues with Rudock. I would put 100% of the checkdown blame on the coaching staff. But when the backup qb comes in and does all the things the starter doesn't, it's hard not to start doubting Rudock.

I can't believe how often i read on here that the qb position doesn't matter because we struggle everywhere else. That's ridiculous. A really good qb can be the difference in a 7-5 year and a 10-2 year. If CJ is allowed to throw down field this year, we will be noticeably better on offense.

You can point to the ISU, MD and kNU losses as being very winnable games if JR had made the attempts to throw to wide open receivers deep. It absolutely cost us the game against ISU and most likely against MD and kNU. Remember that we only lost by 7 points to MD and there were at least 2 occasions that I recall where a receiver was wide open down field and there was no throw. It speaks to your point, PC. JR's fault was his arm strength, but it cost us and that is why it was exposed.

Throw the ball to Tevaun Smith, especially deep. The dude is a stud and should be lighting up the stat sheet. Last year it seemed like more deep balls went to Vandeburg. Nothing against him but he doesnt have the game changing ability that Smith does

If our OL can come together, early, then I think we can go 3-1 non conference. If not, the it could be 2-2 or worse. I'm leery about the OL but that is a position we all know can become good, quickly, with this staff. If the OL doesn't pan out, we might be looking at 4 or 5 wins.

I want to see our rb's in action and hopefully with a good OL.

Of course, I want to see CJ every down and how he performs. But again, the OL is key.

If our LBs dont improve by lunar leaps, it wont matter who we line up on offense. The LBs will have to erase some of the mistakes made by the new DTs. That only compounds the issue.

Nothing.....And that's the problem. This feels like a 7-5/6-6 football team to me.

+ 1 for me here. I honestly get the feeling that Iowa will lose to Illinois State. Lose to a 1aa team (no matter if they were runner up in the title game) and you might as well cancel the rest of the season.

Exactly. We lost those games by Rudock leaving plays on the field. If he makes those simple throws, we win the games in spite of our defense and running game. QB's can mask a lot of problems.

Agreed! I still don't understand why we didn't have more of an open mind to recruiting a few JC linebackers to soften the blow of losing Kirksey, Morris, and Hitchens. Our LBs last year were physically overmatched!!

It's going to be very interesting to see how CJ does this season being the man under center.

The end of the Ferentz era is tied directly to the perfomance of CJB. If he succeeds the Ferentz era should end well, but if he doesn't the Ferentz era ends badly. And that would be a shame!

I am looking forward to a few things:

1. To uncover this question, "Did Jake Rudock limit Jake Rudock back as a Hawkeye or did the HC/OC limit Jake Rudock as a Hawkeye?

2. To see what CJB can do as a full-time starter. This will also give evidence for the answer to the first question.

3. A less-than-average LB did not take advantage of a great d-line. How much improvement by LBs will determine how good Iowa's defense is going to be.

4. Beat the teams they're supposed to beat and do it the way they're supposed to do it.

5. Beat Nebby.
