IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa football team will hold an open practice at Valley Stadium, West Des Moines, on Sunday, April 14. Iowa will conclude spring drills with a final open practice in Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, April 27.

The open practice in West Des Moines will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Valley Stadium. West and Southeast gates will open at noon. All seating will be general admission. There is no admission charge for the practice, but a ticket will be required for entry. Tickets will be available at the customer service counter of select Hy-Vee locations in central and western Iowa beginning at 3 p.m., on Saturday, April 6. The list of participating Hy-Vee stores is below. A limited number of tickets will also be available at the UI Athletics Ticket Office in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

There will not be parking available at Valley Stadium, with the exception of limited handicap parking available in the west parking lot. The Valley Church parking lot, adjacent to Valley Stadium, will not be available until 1 p.m. Additional parking will be available on a first-come-first served basis at: Valley Southwoods Freshman High School, Jordan Creek Elementary, WDM City Hall, WDM Library and WDM Church, surrounding the stadium. Due to limited parking, fans are encouraged to car pool when possible. Access to most parking is available off of Fuller Drive and/or 39th street.

Concession stands within the stadium will be open. No outside food or drink will be allowed in Valley Stadium.

“We are pleased to be able to bring our squad to West Des Moines and central Iowa,â€￾ said Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz. “This is an opportunity for us to reach out to our Central and Western Iowa Hawkeye fans that support us so loyally during the fall in Kinnick Stadium. The staff of the West Des Moines Community School District has been great to work with in putting all the details together. We appreciate the cooperation we have received in the planning and organization and look forward to the event.â€￾

No tailgating, including open frame grills, is allowed on West Des Moines Community School District, city or Valley Church property, including before or after the practice. Alcohol is not ever allowed on city or district property and all district property, including Valley Stadium, is tobacco-free. There will not be a post-event autograph session.

Iowa began spring drills on Wednesday, March 27. Iowa opens its 2013 season at home against Northern Illinois on August 31.

The UI baseball team will also be in action in Des Moines on April 14, as the Hawkeyes take on Kansas State at Principal Park. First pitch is scheduled for approximately 3:30 p.m., following the completion of the Iowa Cubs game which starts at 1:05 p.m.

So there will hardly be any parking by the stadium, this is stupid, and you have to do to hyvee to get a ticket to get in for free, this is stupid.

Of course they have the concession stands open so valley can make some dough but you cant bring in your own food or drink, this is really stupid, What if someone has special dietary needs, they cant bring in a snack with no peanuts or phenyalanine in it.

Why make this so friggin complicated.

They're probably making people get tickets because of the limited seating. Holds 8,000 I think. I'll be at HyVee right at 3:00 on Saturday.

Because they actually thought it through. It is as complicated as needs to be. If 15,000 people show up and they just let everybody in, it would be bad. If they don't tell people not to bring in their own food, people are going to bring in their own food. If they don't tell people to not get drunk and grill, people are going to get drunk and grill.

Pick up a ticket, show up in WDM, don't drink booze. If that is too complicated, you shouldn't be living on your own.

Agreed. The list of no's and don'ts is read like daycare field trip to the zoo.

Really. Way to be accommodating Des Moines. There will be no parking, no autographs for the kiddies, no adult beverages, no nothing so don't even try. I bet if this was the mighty cyclones and paw whoades or Freddy the mayor coming to town the carpet would be rolled out.

West Des Moines isn't interested in a bunch of Tavernhoxs with Billy Bob teeth invading their quaint sleepy village.

How about first come first gets a seat and when it is full too bad and you go home.

So how do they know how many tickets to have at each Hy-vee or how do they know how many tickets to give out at each hy-vee. So I go to a hy-vee at 5 pm and they are out of tickets but a hy-vee across town still has a thousand tickets, that is potentially so stupid.

You would be better off going to the UI athletic ticket office and printing off a ticket, oh I forgot they cant handle anything like this.

Hey I didnt say anything about booze and grilling in parking lots, etc. That is fine to say no booze and grilling in the city and absolutely necessarily from a liability point of view. But to not let people bring in a sandwich and a sealed bottle of pop or water. again stupid.

I know I am being overly critical but geez, no parking, etc.

so why the need for a ticket if free? The gates are just open at Kinnick during spring open practice

this ain't historic kinnick stadium - they probably figure north of the valley stadium capacity would show......especially given the amount of tavern hoks coming down from the trailers parks of skankeny.....

So don't go.

Jesus people ******** about no tailgating. Its a ******* practice on a Sunday, nothing more. It's not an event. God forbid Iowa come to des Moines and let people in the central and western part of the state get a glimpse without having to drive all the way to Iowa city.

So don't go.

I live in Des Moines and I am not going to go. If they have a final scrimmage at Kinnick that is where I will be.

I dont care about boozing it up or tailgaiting. I havent drank before or during a home game in 15 to 20 years.

I just think it would be so much easier to have a web form at UI ticket site to print out a ticket to get you in the door without going to Hy-Vee. And I dont see the harm in people bringing in their own food and sealed bottled drink.

Not worried about tailgating or drinking. Never said that in posts.

Believe me it is an event. I hope it goes well.

Why would they not know how many tickets have been given out? That is the point. They are likely putting a finite number of tickets out.

I don't go to many of them, but I don't think you can bring any food or beverages into Valley football games either. Then again, they make money from ticket sales so I could be wrong. The district clearly wants to make some money off of this, even if it only from concessions. Can't blame them.

I live in W. Des Moines and I'll be there. Driving to Iowa City to watch a spring game or practice is something I would never consider doing, but them coming to me changes the equation, and I'll bet I'm not the only person who feels that way.

Your point about tickets is a good one. Someone who lives in Boone or Newton or wherever will have to drive 45 minutes to get one.
