Iowa Football: A Tale of Two Halves

Winone, i thought about that as well. I did not do my homework, but i suspect that the points in the first half also mean we are doing well in top. If so the d being gassed in the second just does not hold water.

So the defense wasn't gassed in the 2nd half against Ohio State? C'mon man.

One thing I've wondered about.. When did that Rhabdo incident happen? Summer before 2010 season? I've been curious if the workout regimen changed since then. I don't know, that's probably grasping at straws..

I hate to say it but its the same old stuff every gm. The opponent makes adjustments and we go flat like we have no anwser for nothing their doing. Coach Ferentz gets so damn conservative sometimes he starts playing not to lose instead of playing to winthe gm. It gets very ffrustrating watching him go in to that mode.

Half time is all about making adjustments and good coaching. Our quality opponents have blown us out in the second half.

Do I need to connect the dots for you?

Well then considering top in the first half, one would think many on our o are gassed as well in the second half. As for o adjustments, as i said maybe the problem is package size. Powell it has been said, new qb also.

This is concerning, and I think even more so now when it is in black and white. IE I knew we were better in the 1st half, but didn't realize just how much.

I think we need to put more trust in Rudock personally. Let him pass some more, and open up the running game. I loved the play call to open the OT. That quick pass when they were just laying off the WR and had 8 in the box. We did that a few times actually, but we need to just continue to do that, as if the opponents want to shut down the run, take that WR quick pass and get 4-8 yards.

I liked the one time we threw that quick pass out to Powell, he made a couple moves and was close to being gone. Need to do things like that to get the ball in his hands and take the 4-8 yards they are giving us.

All right. There's an easy answer, here (probably not an appreciated answer, though. Who wants to give tells away). Pass defense... Iowa's pass defense is traditionally soft.. really soft. <P> First half: Iowa's opponents try to run the ball against Iowa's vaunted run defense with little luck. Second half: Iowa's opponents are behind (this year, for sure) so they have to make up for the deficit. The quickest and easiest way to catch up against Iowa's defense is to pass.

Is that the season average or yesterday's numbers; as I'm sure it'll be along that trend.

Ok, here ya go for the season.

1st 2nd
NIU 18:48 11:52
M.ST 18:54 19:24
ISU 19:10 18:53
WMU 15:27 20:44
MINN 15:41 20:20
MSU 12:09 10:38
OSU 18:05 6:55
NW 16:42 13:05

Against OSU Iowa had the ball for 3:07 in the 3rd and 3:48 in the 4th.

The Rhabdo incident was brought on by a squat test they were doing, not about the strength and conditioning they do through out the year. The actual workout program has changed little. Doyle has not backed off at all as far as that goes.

Except that OSU and NW both ran the ball on Iowa in the 2nd half.

The passing opens up Iowa's concentrated run defense. And Iowa's defense (not talking about individual players) is not athletic. And NW really, accept for that one fluke pass completion, never passed that much against Iowa. Passing overall softens up Iowa's defense. Spread also softens up Iowa's defense. Why did NW have better luck than Minnesota running the ball against Iowa? It certainly wasn't their offensive linemen. It was NW's spread offense - which is more athletic than Iowa's defense, as a unit

And we still won. Must have been the coaching.
