Iowa Defense

I’m curious what Fran thinks is the cause of the inconsistency of the defense? Is he asking and putting them in certain situations that they’re not physically capable of executing? Why are the same mistakes happening over and over? If a said player or players are not executing the game plan, they need to simplify the scheme or put said player or players on the bench.

I just don’t understand why it keeps happening or why he keeps playing players that are not doing their job.

Like Ferentz says, it’s our job to put them in position to succeed.

You have to play Garza because of his offense but man his defense is brutal

Incomplete recruiting at the point guard spot along with not enough beef in the low post. Combine that with poor team defense and defensive fundamentals and this is what you get when they play real competition. Fran throws a number of defensive looks at the opponent, but the team does not do any of them particularly well aside from the cupcakes and other middling teams.

Take a look at Mr. Davis's zone defense back in the day. Yes, it would have its trouble with defending the perimeter from time to time (like Fran's teams, Lick, and Alford), but look at the way his players had their hands up and communicating with each other. They typically had a triangle around the basket for solid rebounding position. Mr. Davis's zone was much more active. His teams were consistently a top team in rebounding.

Then, go back and watch Fran's team again and see the difference.

And, Mr. Davis's press. Yes, Sparty ate it for lunch, but how many times did it save Iowa's ass because they committed to working on it.

Again, I think Fran's teams have lacked an identity. Ok, maybe that is not quite right. They have the reputation for scoring points and giving up a lot of points. But, what is it that his teams do real well?

I think they need to work on specializing in fewer schemes and do it real well. If you want to be good zone team, then commit to it. If you want to be a good pressing team, then commit to it.

Sometimes, it just feels like we are all over the place defensively. And, it has been better this year against the lesser teams, but the same problems from the past have surfaced against the big boys.

Listened to the Sports Fanatics last night. Jess Settles' take on the defensive woes was that the talent is there to play good defense but something is just missing now in they're execution. Jake Sullivan's take was that Iowa just isn't athletic and quick enough to play good defense. Me thinks it's a combination of both.

Agree for the most part. Poor PG recruiting is the 1st part of this problem. Too many schemes is another part of the problem. Pick 1 and commit to doing it really well. The pace that Fran wants to play on offense, is another part of the problem. Playing good defense is hard work because it is "reactionary". look no further than JBo's scoring/shooting woes. I don't think he has the legs to score like he did in the past AND play tough defense. It's gonna take a little time to develop that leg strength, IMO. I think we have enough beef in the paint. They struggle with the rotations of multiple schemes. They are thinking rather than reacting. Finally, this is new to this group of players. It's gonna take awhile to get it. Fran is going to have to adjust his recruiting style for more defense ready players.

I was going to start a thread on this. Why? Why can't they just hold an opposing team in the 70's. That's all they would have to do as they usually score 80+ pts a game. Find a way to keep a team in the 70's pt range. krist!

Iowa's starters don't seem to have the physical and/or mental ability to play hard defense for a full game vs BTen competition. Defensive weakness at the Guard positions is well-known and obvious, but Iowa's bigs have been especially frustrating to watch. I feel Cook puts forth minimal effort on defense...with his physique he should pull out some tapes of Reggie Evans and see what type of all-around player he could REALLY be. Cook puts forth little defensive effort because he doesn't want to foul and sit for 10 min of the 1st half because he picked up his 2nd foul. Garza and Kriener put forth great effort, but need better defensive coaching. Fran had the ability to turn this talented team into a BTen title contender if he would have hired a defensive specialist coach/consultant immediately after the end of last season. Imagine...

Because we play programs night in night out that have the same resources with arguably better talent at key positions, with Coaches that are better at preparing their team. I full heartedly believe that Painter, Beilein and Izzo could have this same Iowa squad in the top 4 of the B1G and at least a few more that could have us with a better record.

I should add, I am glad that Fran is willing to use zone defense and give some pressing looks. It seemed Alfraud and Lackluster were risk-adverse to these concepts. It is just the execution of the schemes in the half court defense is the problem (along with an incomplete roster).

None of us expect them to be an elite defense...just adequate. We have been adequate much of the season. Just a thought...are we still adequate as long as we aren't playing the 4 best teams in the conference? Was Minnesota the exception? Were we adequate in all of the wins.

Set aside Friday's game...good or bad outcome. It will be interesting to see if we suddenly become adequate (good enough to win) when we start playing teams not ranked in the Top 12 by Kenpom.

The 82 points to Penn State (2nd highest of their year - they scored 87 vs North Florida) was also bad (even in a win).

Yea he was the man reason that all the starters got pulled. He hates running back to get on defense. He honestly needs to work on his cardio much more. Hes too often gasping for air more than anyone on the floor.

Oh *uck we just gave up another layup. Better pull the starters!

Well maybe keep Garza under the basket where he belongs instead of running him to the top of the post to guard a smaller quicker player, then making him run back to guard a post after he's got position. Garza gets about two fouls a game this way then has to back off on defense so as not to get benched.
