Iowa conference duals were Satruday

to hard to get kids in the college. simpson has higher standards than other college in the area. with grandview starting wrestling there are more scholarships to go around. select few like to pay 30K a year to wrestle at simpson. coach manny is doing his best..he can recruit the wrestlers but can't get them in with their act scores. i think 5 kids alteast wanted to go to simpson but couldn't so they went to coe got in with ease

ya, I was afraid of that, but then again, especially at DIII, we are academics first. When did Coach Petersen leave? (I have been away from Iowa for 6 years). I actually had my last class at Simpson with him.

I just looked, average ACT score at Simpson is a 25 - not bad, but not Harvard level, is Coe really that much easier to get into than Simpson? For some reason I thought they were similiar.

lets just say ive heard they can get almost anybody in. athletics at simpson is not top priority. coach pete left 2 years ago. it was time for pete to leave though. manny has a whole different outlook on wrestling practice than pete did by far.

to sum it up there are no exceptions for good athletes anymore at simpson if they lack in the smarts level

That's all news to me. We were told Coe had high academic standards to get in. My son had to wait on an administrative decision with an ACT of 19 and a GPA of 3.7. He was accepted but was watched very carefully...

I also just looked and Coe's averages are as follows:
Average HS GPA: 3.6
Average ACT score: 25

if somebody did some digging you'll find some interesting facts about coe and wartburg on some of their wrestlers...past and present

I won't argue that point at all although I have no facts to either prove or disprove it. I will say that I think if a person were to do some digging into any of the DIII colleges, or any college division for that matter, whether it be wrestling or women's swimming, something can be found. I did go to the Simpson web site and it appears they have a "swing scale" for admission and do allow for exceptions.

id like to see the stats on sports alone if possible!

As a Simpson Alum - I believe we do not give special treatment for athletes when it comes to admission - for the most part I did not think the rest of the Iowa Conference does (I have nothing to back this up, it was just my assumption, which could be wrong for all I know). We do have a sliding scale for admission - there are no set standards, so someone with a lower ACT score (low 20's) can have a good GPS/class standing to make up for it and vice versa.
I can say I know people that have lost/where in danger of losing their academic scholarships if they played sports because it would appear that they "did not deserve an academic scholarship" because their grades where not good enough and it would look like the school was giving out atheltic scholarships.

There was a push by our president at the time to put in minimum academic standards for athletes, but it was shot down by some of the other presidents - mainly by the two schools that left the conference (and whose academics did not stack up with most of the rest).

I found this on the IIAC web site for 2008-2009.

ok i know wartburg has a better tradition and so does coe now

isn't it a shame some of these wrestlers will never see the mat at wartburg with their talent?

i could go back and forth with this all day either way i have no proof that this goes on but from seeing these kids get personally denied at simpson then accepted at another is why i brought up why simpson has declined in past years is all!

Wartburg 53
Coe 35
Simpson 15

Out of curiousity - what is your affiliation with Simpson?

I worked in the atheltic department for four years there while I was a student
