Iowa Coaching Succession Plan

So in a 20yr run at Iowa where his defenses have mostly been pretty damn good, NO ONE has offered him that opportunity? I could be wrong but I certainly find that hard to believe.
I have no idea if he's ever been offered. Neither do you, though.

If it is true, then he must not be highly thought of outside Iowa. Maybe the only job he would jump at is MSU.
Because he hasn't said if he's ever been offered a head job (which you know), he must not be highly thought of? That's a pretty big stretch. Maybe you should wait till happy hour to break out the Five Star.

Although I do agree that it's a badge of honor most want to accomplish...just not everyone. And honestly, there's nothing wrong with it if he doesn't want to.
I don't remember saying there was.

I've heard Sacremento, in particular, is an absolute doozy of a city. It's the only one of those five I've never visited.
I used to play pick up games in Old Sac (early 90s). I was the only white man in sight. That seems like a life time ago. First game I played, I dropped about 20 on em. The "white boy this" and "white boy that" nonsense went away quick.

KF is only 62 and I don't really see him wanting to quit anytime soon. He doesn't have the flamboyant personality for TV and all of his kids are adults now...so what would he even do after coaching?
I'm not sure but I wouldn't look forward to 18 hour days if I was 62. I'm 47 and it doesn't really appeal to me.

- Again, never said I did. I hope he has cause I think he deserves the opportunity.

You made the very clear assumption that the team he would be the HC of would be a CFP contender. Now that's a pretty big stretch. Maybe you should be the one laying off an early happy hr.

Never said you did. I was just saying that I have zero problem if he doesn't have head coaching aspirations.

True, but football hasn't been your entire life for as long as you can remember either. It would probably be hard to shut that off when its all you've known for the last 50 years.

I said if he was a head coach that team would be a playoff contender. At least I based it on something relevant to football like his past success and the fact that most successful head coaches were also successful coordinators. Not all of them are.

As far as happy hour I can’t help you there. I don’t drink.

Maybe I should.

A couple thoughts on that...

- Parker in my opinion would produce more wins. He's been in college football for a long, long time, he knows Iowa football better than Brian, and his unit has been successful for a long time. Often times it is the only thing keeping Iowa above .500. Brian can't say that. The NFL coaching thing doesn't translate to college ball. Ask Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier if they relate to each other.

- Kirk is 55% in conference play :)

There won't be an outside hire or Phil Parker as head coach. It will be Brian. I would bet my paid off house on it right now and sleep like a baby.

I disagree, but you make a good argument. And good catch on the win%, technically it is 55.8%. But based upon the kool-aid I am drinking, that rounds up.

I am not going to bet my house (which isn't paid off anyway), but if I had to bet, I think I would take Parker, then Brian, then the field. I am obviously in the minority with my belief.

Sleep in on Saturdays. Hell, everyday!

My house is an old, cheap, 880 square foot box so don’t feel bad. Even if I lost that bet you wouldn’t want it.

I think Brian Ferentz will be the next head coach as KF will take over as AD as Barta will have to retire due to health issues. If Dantonio retires or gets fired due to the mess over at MSU, Phil Parker would be in the conversation to take over at his alma mater.

Can’t think of a worse scenario to play out, but it’s also the most likely.

So depressing.

That's a pretty old head coach these days. Besides, if he was interested in being a head coach he would've been one by now.

From his presser:

Q. Do you ever think about being a head coach? Has that ever entered your mind?
PHIL PARKER: Yeah, it would be nice sometimes, and when we go through it, and sometimes you like to be the head coach and make the decisions and change some calls out there when Coach moves — hey, it’s 2nd down, no, it’s 3rd down, what down it is, yeah, that’s when I’d like to be the head coach.

I think being the head coach, you become more a manager than actually coaching the game of football, so that’s some things when it comes to it. If somebody gave me an opportunity, I’d take a swing at it.

Is there a comp for Parker potentially becoming a head coach in his late 50's after a long run as assistant/coordinator?

The last Castro is out in Cuba...long run...you (and your descendants) can stay a long time when you control most everything...Phil has the wrong last name... 0% chance

Not sure about college but if you're talking any level of football Buddy Ryan fits that description to a "T".

Bill Snyder was 49 or so when he became head coach of Kansas State so he falls a few years short of your age criteria.

If somebody gave me an opportunity.

Sure seems like a very weak sauce statement. Why don't you go get that opportunity Mr. Parker instead of waiting for somebody to give it to you? (Probably why you're 55 and not a head coach yet.)

I don't know about you Fryowa but I want a head coach that has a bit more drive towards a goal he has in mind.
