Which coach will have a better than expected season or the most success between the three. Does Kirk get the team a BIG championship game? Does Fran get his team to the Sweet 16? Bluder?

Just curious who you think could have surprise or better than expected year.

Bluder has the best chance, she has one of the top 5 players in the nation back next year. I've given up hope that Kirk will ever win the Big 10 championship again. It's been 14 years since he last won it. I don't think he will ever beat Wisconsin again. Fran? after last year it's hard to get hopes up, but at least the entire team is pretty much back. Fran's teams seem bi polar

Lisa Bluder walks away with Iowa’s top coaching honor

Lisa is like the Mr. Davis Davis of women's basketball. Usually gets the Hawks in to the Dance, doesn't usually advance past the second round. Consistent is a good word for her.

What about Brands? Probably a top 4 finish again, albeit with a much smaller field of competition.

Good point. With them bringing in a few guys to help shore up the 133 spot and potentially the 141 spot as well, the Hawks could challenge PSU for the top spot, but that's probably not happening. Unless all of the Iowa guys wrestle out of their minds and some PSU guys slip up. I'm thinking a 2nd place finish is realistic, which should put Brands in the conversation.

It's nuts that we're talking about Iowa as just 2nd place contender, but it just shows how much more competitive D1 wrestling has become since Gable's guys and Sanderson have climbed the ranks. I think '19-'20 has a chance to be their year again though.

As much as I hate it, Iowa is the Nebraska football of wrestling.

I live in a wrestling-heavy town and I constantly hear people talking about how the Hawks are the best in the world even though they haven’t been (other than a good 3 year run) since the 90s.

What I hate even more is that Cael Sanderson is the next Dan Gable because he’s building what Iowa had in the 70s-90s and what Saban has right now: a self-fulfilling prophecy where he doesn’t have to work at recruiting anymore, and then just goes on a rampage for the next 25 years. Sure, he’ll lose a Spencer Lee here and there, but on the team side of things he’ll always have the best. Just like in the 80s when if you were the best recruit in a given weight class, everyone knew you were headed to IC.

You make a great point and I agree to most of it, except I wouldn't say Iowa is quite at Nebraska football levels... yet.

While Cael at PSU seems to have it locked up for the foreseeable future, Iowa is still recruiting and competing at a high enough level to make waves with an outside shot at a championship, and recent recruiting has me feeling optimistic that Brands can make another run at the top (then again, I'm usually optimistic about ALL Iowa sports). It's gonna be tough though, for sure.

I'd say that all dynasties end some time, and Iowa's ended when Cael's began. Sucks, but it doesn't erase what Iowa accomplished during their time at the top.

The worst part is that we’re talking about Iowa wrestling in terms of outside shots at the championship and sneaking one in once in a while. When I was a kid it was a given that Iowa was going to run the table and the discussion was only over who was going to take second. Those days are splitsville. I loved those days, but I refuse to revert to Husker-level delusions.

Penn St. now is the Alabama of wrestling. Iowa is the Clemson who may have a chance at contending each year and might get over the hump every so many years, but usually 2nd or 3rd to Penn St.

It's a bitter pill to swallow, but Sanderson has PSU on a trajectory that isn't going anywhere for at least 10 years.

That said, I wouldn't equate Iowa wrestling to Nebraska football. Most Iowa wrestling fans - most - understand where the program is at the current time, and are not delusional in their thinking. Frustrated and antsy, absolutely, but not "Nebraska football delusional (NFD)," which, BTW, is to be added to the next DSM for psychiatric diagnoses...
