Iowa band had issues at the game on Sat...

No fan base is immune to this behavior but lets take action by each issue just like we try to do with any bad behavior.

I've been to a bunch of Northwestern games and their fans are really chill. They don't really have the equivalent of TavernHok fans and pretty much everyone at their games either went to/has a family member who went to Northwestern or they live within 5 or 10 miles of the stadium.

There are plenty of things to criticize Pollard for but his leadership has been essential to the growth of the fanbase and the improvement among a lot of the programs. It's really showing up in the project he's leading to make huge changes to the Iowa State Center, and it's probably the biggest building project since the entire area was constructed in the 70s. Tremendous job by him and something to be seriously proud of for him.

Bryce, my man, you gotta get better at sniffing out people. Iowa State's fan base has grown because Dan McCarney made it no longer a total embarrassment to wear Clown gear during football season. The fan base in Iowa has grown because the ISU grads by and large stay around central Iowa. As for facilities improvements, that stuff is happening everywhere and a huge reason for it is not any specific AD, it is the monstrous amount of media revenues the teams are pulling in.

Yes, I have been to 4-5 Hawk games at Northwestern. I first went with friends in the early to mid '80s and jNW was not very good and the hawks were very good. There were probably 20K jNW fans and the rest Iowa fans. Most jNW fans acted like they were on a picnic spreading their food and drink on their laps taken from their wicker basket.

Yes, they are pretty much a polite crowd and that comes from I would say for the demographic a more gentile people and also lower expectations. I do remember sitting low on the northwest sidelines when around 1996-7 when the hawks outgained jNW by about 400 to 150 and lost in a real wet windy battle and there were these parents with about a 13-15 year old boy and a younger girl. The boy was totally wild, yelling crap and a real negative distraction in the crowd. Several of us had to ask the parents to calm him down. He acted like he had some emotional control problems and finally by the 2nd half the kid did settle down but that is the only negative time I have had there (except when the hawks would throw away leads and chances to win games there).

Context. I was saying that he isn’t credible when pushing some sort of idea that the refs are out to get Iowa State. Again, in this case he’s wrong and based on the way Rhoads was acting behind him I’m guessing he wanted him to do it.

Campbell would never allow that.

If you aren’t credible then you aren’t credible. You can’t cut the baby in half here @BryceC

The facilities improvements discussed yesterday aren't coming from athletics revenues. It's a total face lift to the entrance to Ames, and it's probably the most ambitious building project to happen in central Iowa for a long time, especially if it's pulled off with just outside investment.

ISU has sold 45,000 season tickets this year. Under Mac I think the best that ever happened was 30,000. That's not just natural growth of the fanbase or we'd see it everywhere.

OK4P is right here. Iowa has done tens of millions of more renovations than ISU has done in the same time, and that credit should go to TV monies, not AD’s. Minnesota has a new stadium and brand new state of the art practice facilities. Is their fan base slavishly devoted to the AD slim ball who oversaw those projects?

Doesn't ISU have absurdly cheap tickets, though? I know my last year at Iowa we were at around a grand per ticket with donations added in for not great seats. I thought ISU had like $200 or maybe even less ticket deals. Most of the other schools have figured out that you're best bet to maximize revenue is actually to fleece the hell out of the die hard fans. Pollard just wants butts in the seats.

Half the NW fans at the game act like they were just strolling by with their lattes in tow, noticed something going on in this large gathering arena, walked in to see what's up, and decided to stick around for awhile (until they need their lattes re-filled).

I did see one particularly great public freak out incident at Northwestern one year during a cold game. Some d-bag noodle armed beta who looked like he drove an Audi or Range Rover was trying to return "hot chocolate" to the concession stand. He said "it tastes like water with fake chocolate added" and was incredulous when he found out that it was indeed water with swiss miss added. Like the guy didn't even know swiss miss existed until that moment and thought that the poor bastards running the concession stands were sitting back there frothing milk for a hot chocolate on par with Starbucks. I was like 4th in line and the line was getting pissy and the second guy in line told the guy he was gonna get the cops if he didn't stop berating the poor kid running the stand.

That's to keep people coming yeah, but that isn't where the big $ is coming from. That is coming from media coverage (tv). And as they noted yesterday on radio, yeah places like ball park village in st louis are cool, but they have a large number of home games driving business. You will have 7 home football games that will be largest attendance by far. What happens in summer months when no one is there and nothing going on?

I think the city of Ames is trying to copy the city of Ankeny Prairie Trail Development. Many people attending ISU events are finding lodging and restaurants in Ankeny preferable to finding it in Ames. Ankeny has more lodging and food establishments than Ames and a lot of it is located just off of I-35 . There is a new 140+ room Marriot Residence Inn in the area referred to as the District and numerous restaurants are around it. The population of Ankeny is larger than Ames and is projected to go over 100K. Other than football games I do not think the out of area fan is going to stay in Ames or hang around it with the Des Metro area so close. In 2018 there was 100M in new construction in the District of Prairie Trail. More millions are being spent in 2019. When you're one of the top five growing cities of over 50K there are reasons people are investing.

Wrestling sold more season tickets than ever this year. It has rarely ever gotten over 3,000 fans in a dual since well before Pollard. I'd love to see any proof ISU ever had 13,000 fans for ever one meet.

Iowa State should not have baseball, its been gone for 20 years, and bringing it back would be absurd.

Iowa State hasn’t had me a gymnastics for 25 years and shouldn't now.

Link to Fennelly quote? If it's true he should be fired.

You are making my point..
ISU had a premier Gymnastics Program
Same with Wrestling.
ISU has a cut-rate Big 12 athletics program. No Baseball program in the Big 12 would be like Iowa not having a wrestling program in the BIG.

I can't provide you a link on Fennelly's foul mouth because it came from one of his former players.

Like I said, hardly any sports left over there. Pollard should be classified as a part-time employee.
Basketball, Cross Country, Track, Wrestling, Golf and Football. Three of those sports involve virtually nothing. And to not have Baseball is un-American!!
Former ISU women's bb player told me about his foul mouth. I was surprised anyone would talk to women like that but I guess they like to be treated just like the men.
