Iowa B-Ball Exhibition Game Thread

not a lot of flow to the game. I am thinking the entire month of November will be like this as teams adjust to the refs calling things tighter. I like it and down the road the game will be more enjoyable not watching people beat the tar out of each other

Agreed. Games might look really bad for a month or two. If the refs keep making the calls though, players will adjust, and teams will adjust.

Games are going to be won and lost at the FT line this year with the games are going to be called.

Olesani looks good.
Dev not looking to shoot much, but the one-dribble move to close the half was very nice. His length makes that nearly impossible for most PGs to defend.
Everone else seemed a little ho-hum in the first half.

3 point shooting...not looking good on either end.

They said at the beginning of the game that the NBA did the same with the rules and it only added 5 more ppg. Is that right? And is that worth it? 2 shots (or probably 5 extra free throws). I don't know if 5 is an accurate number though.

I haven't seen it all, but Gabe has probably looked the best the last 10 minutes. Dev took the ball to the hoop at the end of the half pretty easily. JU has missed a couple of FT's and the threes I've seen have been bricks. We certainly aren't playing at near the level we did at the end of last season which is a bit disappointing considering we only lost May. Does anyone have the first half stats?

I don't know the numbers, but it has made a huge impact on the NBA game. It's completely opened up the game and teams have moved to drive and kick offensives instead of the iso heavy NBA of the 90's and early 2000's which makes for a much better product to watch.

Refs are hopefully going to keep on calling them. They will have to force thug teams like Wisconsin kicking and screaming toward a new more open BB game.

Comparing to the NBA isn't wise, IMO. For one thing, there are FAR fewer teams. And at the college level, that number will probably fluctuate by conference. Conferences like the Big 12, where most of the teams are run and gun, probably won't see a big change. Leagues like the Big Ten and Big East, which are far more physical than any other conference, could see a much bigger uptick in points per game. We aren't all that physical on defense (we were just excellent at closing out shooters and contesting shots), and we don't play much of the physical, grinding offense. A team like ours, in a conference like the Big Ten, should see a much bigger impact from the rule changes than most other teams.

And besides, it should be less about increasing scoring and more about just getting teams to play real basketball again. You can play great defense without mugging people (we were an excellent example of that last year).

according to my twitter feed, this is a pretty ugly game. bad shooting? sloppy play? turnovers? what's going on?
