Iowa Athletic Department Budget- Ticket Sales Decline

After reading that, I'm kinda pi$$ed.....

1. Why, in the name of all that is decent and holy, are we spending more on women's volleyball than wrestling?
2. Taking football out of the equation, Iowa is spending 25% more ($15M vs $12M) on women's sports than men's sports.
3. We are spending 13.25% ($11.9M) of our revenues on "Administrative Expenses". Really?! So based on this, our priorities in the athletic department are #1 - Football; #2 - Debt Service for Facility Upgrades, and; #3 - Administration. That administrative number should be HALF that amount. We're spending double for administration than we are on men's basketball for crying out loud. You wanna know why we can't buy out Ferentz? Look no further than all the cushy six figure jobs created in the athletic department that do nothing. Cut Admin in half, take the $6M savings and buy out Ferentz. There, problem solved.

UI athletics is another big business with bloated salaries, multiple levels of organization where cronies and friends get hired to be assistant to the assistant to the associate director of some director.

Most large businesses just need to clean house sometimes, and it is recommend by many business consultants to reorganizations to cut out dead weight or high salaried people.

Rhetorical question, right? It would be politically incorrect and sexist to ask such a thing.

See answer to #1

Particularly maddening considering all the f-ups and poor execution we've watched over the past 5 years..

Barta gets too much credit for fund raising. You could send smiley around town with a hat and people would be lined up to donate to Iowa athletics. Any decent AD could raise money for Hawkeye sports.

As for simply being an athletic director... he sucks.

Barta should return 2/3 of his salary for the job he has been doing. Out of touch. Clueless. Poor manager of people. At least all the buildings are shiny and new. Full of new, empty trophy cases.

SpiderRico; "Cut Admin in half, take the $6M savings and buy out Ferentz. There, problem solved."

And....spend some of that $6 million to hire a Marketing Director that actually knows what marketing is.

There's a novel concept!

For $11.9M in administrative expenses, we get the following:

1. A "Let's Get Mad Again" basketball campaign
2. Mamba #5 played during basketball game timeouts
3. A lottery that would have students entered into a drawing if they purchased season ticket - that turned out to be illegal.
4. A press release announcing the honoring of Roy Marble that starts out, "....we won't be retiring Roy's number or jersey...."

I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. Boy, we sure are getting bang for our buck in that $11.9M administrative expense.

Rent-seekers gonna seek rent, bro.

Spider, you may well be correct that "Administrative Expenses" are bloated. However, often the label on a category like Ad Exp is misleading in the sense that there is much more to pay for than "cushy" jobs. We would need to look at a breakdown of line items before we get too excited about this number. Just sayin'.
