Iowa Announces NIL Plan for Student-Athletes

Instead of $100 handshakes, Texas boosters can now (legally) just buy a poster from the starting QBs merch site. This thing is going to get abused by the SEC and Little 12 like no tomorrow.

Yes, blame the Big 8 and SEC and talk about how sanctimonious the Big Ten is. I'm sure Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State will send their presidents up to talk to throngs of reporters about how they intend to "win the right way" and keep the "amateur athletic model" alive.

If you think the SEC and Big 8 are the only ones with big boosters you’re under a rock.

They will be amatures as long as they don't get paid to play the sport. Making money off your NIL is not the same as getting paid for playing.

Sure it is. It's just getting paid by a different pocket. The Jump Man logo is worth $0 without Jordan's NBA career. But with it, the logo is worth $5 billion. Maybe more.

NIL is going to be a massive recruiting tool. Alumni associations of programs that want to be successful are going to have an autograph program and memorabilia sales program so they can tell recruits "THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE ALUMNI CLUB HAS A COMMITMENT OF $100,000 IF YOU BRING YOUR TALENTS TO KNOXVILLE!" Hell, SMU might be the best program in 10 years.

I understand that all big programs have boosters and that many cheat. I am sure Iowa is not immune to that. But, if you don't think this rule is going to get abused more by schools in the South, YOU are living under a rock.

What used to be in the shadows is now going to largely be legal and out in the open. Legal and seemingly unregulated money flowing directly and quietly towards student athletes? You think Iowa can compete with Texas A&M, Tennessee, OSU, Florida State, LSU etc.?

Moving forward, teams with the most organized and ardent fan bases and boosters may be as influential as the head coach as to where kids decide to "matriculate."

You might have a point if Iowa competed with those schools in the first place. But Iowa doesn’t.

You’re acting like all of a sudden SEC/B8/ACC teams have 300 scholarships available at once.

If anything, Iowa has an advantage compared to much of the B10 because we develop under recruited kids into successful NFLers.

This is a fair point. But, think of it this way. "Hey kid, we don't have a scholarship for you, but we think you can work your way into one. Sure, you can take that scholarship Iowa is offering you, but hey, we have NIL deals with boosters that will more than offset the money you will pay in tuition." So hey, maybe NIL is an easy way around schollie limits.

Again, I can't see a way that this rule helps Iowa in anyway.

My other concern is that this rule allows West Coast teams to be more competitive given the entertainment markets they are in. The Pac 12 has been a relative joke of late, but there are some sleeping giants in that conference like UCLA and USC. Does this rule change give them the juice to reemerge?

Yeah that might be a bit of a sticking point... That 85 scholly limit is just going to be grey area now. However however however with everyone in the same boat the kids still have to decide if they'd rather be the 4th string at Bama or start earlier at an Illinois or any school inbetween. That already goes on so to me it's about the money. Can a kid that's 4th string at Bama generate for themselves a brand and make more NIL $ then they can starting at an Iowa, Illinois pick your school?

Those kitchen table discussions between the kids their parents, coaches, and now 3rd party agents of sorts will be interesting...

I can see Phil Knight and his Nike money making Oregon a powerhouse in the west as well.

I predict a dark era on the horizon. If Ohio State can keep just 5-8 of the in-state kids a year that it "doesn't have room for" and use that year or two to get a "good look" they can absolutely take MSU, Iowa and Wisconsin down a peg. Someone there has to be thinking about that.

Sure, they can have a "heart to heart" with the kids who aren't penciled as starters after their second year, but we all know those guys will not be nearly as good as the 3 stars who bloom late that provide a lot of juice for the other solid Big Ten programs. If schools in big states like PA, MI, TX, FL, etc. have enough economic pull to create a shadow slush fund of an additional 20-30 scholarships Iowa is completely fucked.

Depending on if those kids are happy to get paid to not play. Which I think they'll a few of those. But I still think playing will be priortized highly by the top level players. These kids work their butts off for the offers they get so I can't see minimizing their chances at ever playing being an option for most of the really good ones. I think they'll be an eb and flow to it year to year

There is a certain arrogance that most top level players possess. Most humans, really. Sure, a guy can do the math and see the odds are against him, but he will beat them. If that weren't the case, programs like Bama or Clemson wouldn't have any depth. There will be guys like Purdy who will turn down the Bama offer, but those guys are probably only 10-20% of the recruiting pool.

Sure their is a lot of that arrogance along with what coaches promise and put in their heads. Not every coach is like KF and strait up with em to say the least. KF is in the minority on that.

To me where the $ might change things too and possibly level the playing field more would be this. Say you're either going to be a 3rd/4th stringer level kid at Bama/Clemson. Or you've been there for a yr or 2 already and that's what you are. How much NIL $ can a benchwarmer make? Starting and actually being on the field will be paramount to a kids brand I would think. So if nothing else I think all the transferring around will only continue to be nuts. With some kids having the foresight to realize getting on the field faster will be better for them then say riding the bench 3 yrs or so.

I bet there's more variables I haven't thought of that'll come up too. With the transfer portal being as absolutely nuts as it is and will continue to be that can be the X factor for schools like Iowa. So far we've used it to get complimentary players here and there which is great too. But if we can get a difference making Qb or receiver or DE etc from the portal I hope we don't hesitate doing so. But that may be a tough thing for KF to transition into even wanting to do...

Yeah, there will be quality in the portal and guys will want to play. But the issue is that the guy who rides pine for 2 years at OSU and is then penciled in as the starter in year 3 ain't leaving. OSU will get a 1-2 year look at guys. The best will stay, the guys who aren't as good will be in the portal. As things stand now, the big states churn out plenty of talent that programs like Wisconsin and Iowa can jump on. OSU is the best team in the conference, but the delta between OSU and Iowa/Wisconsin is fairly slim in a lot of years. But once the big states get that "first look" at guys, I worry that it won't hold up. The "diamonds in the rough" will become rarer and harder to find. Hopefully Iowa can pick apart programs like Northern Illinois or Western Kentucky.

Regarding schollie limits and whether NIL will impact it, I will just remind everyone there is a reason they put schollie limits in place. The big schools were hoarding kids with 150 man rosters. Why would a kid do that? He doesn't know or believe he won't make it. He was the stud on his high school team. He can go to Bama and win a job. Schollie limits even the playing field a lot. Not enough, but a lot.

I am a big believer in sports that even the playing field so it just comes down to the skill of the coach, management, and in some ways, the support of the fan base. That is why I love the NFL and hate the NBA/MLB models. The Packers have just as much chance as the Jets. Can we say the same thing about the Brewers and Yankees?

Unless there are some tight guidelines put around NIL (which I am not seeing), this is taking the sports I love the most (college football and basketball) in the wrong direction from a competitive balance perspective.
