Introducing the 2014 Iowa State Defense

Iowa State probably has what appears to be the worst team that they have put on the field in a long time this year. The defense that suffered the worst loss in school history last year lost key players in the off-season. Possibly the worst news for them is that the offense wasn't able to score on the defense in a recent scrimmage. Iowa isn't looking a whole lot better but certainly has their best shot at a big win this year. The game is usually close, it will be interesting.

How is IOWA who dominated ISU in their backyard last year, won more than twice as many games as isu, returns more players who have more talent and gets to play this game at home "not looking a whole lot better"?

From my perspective IOWA looks a whole lot better in every measurable category.

Good point, but the bulk of the credit for such a feat has to go to the "Wizard". Unless you think his swift rise atop one of the worst defenses in all of college football was merely on his avg ability?

The wizards defense has been consistent so far.

Do you not pay attention at all? Iowa is getting all sort of mention as candidates to win the West, and Herbstreit just picked Iowa as a dark horse to get into the playoff.

Basically ISU is a bottom dweller, and Iowa is a division contender, they could not be more polar opposite.

No seriously, can someone tell me who these guys are? I just happened upon their two deep on rivals and looked at the experience they have coming back in 2014. That whole defense has like 2-3 guys that have played at all and have any statistics for 2013. Their front seven is laden with RS Freshmen and Sophomores who haven't played. They do have a few seniors on the DL, but they haven't played much if any.

I'm sure the ISU trolls can go into detail that this is exactly the way they like things, or "Yeah, we tried to do that". I'm sorry but if our OL is healthy, our offense is going to go to punish them for being bad. How do these guys talk crap about Brandon Scherff's weightlifting feats? More than likely it was an ISU offensive player...the defensive guys are telling them to shut up and not **** him off.

I'm not sure I've seen a major college defense with this little experience. Thank goodness they have Mangino to outscore everyone.

There for sure are finding there way; But sat they held the offense out of the end zone. It will be game when we play. But, I think we win a close one.

This time of year is funny. Their offense can't score a single TD against their defense in the scrimmage, and that's translated to "Well the good news is our defense must be making huge strides, and the offensive line didn't play anyways so I'm not too worried about the offense".

A rational person from outside the box would simply say... Umm let's see. Your defense sucked last year, and your offense sucked last year. So there's a good chance that they both still suck this year.

But of course that line of thinking is absurd because Mangenius is in charge!

Keeping your own terrible offense out of the end zone doesn't reveal much.

Wow, we know ISU has countless unstoppable weapons on offense, a performance like that can only mean one thing, their defense also has tons of unstoppable weapons! ISU may be the first time since the early 1900's to have an undefeated, un scored upon season.

Iowa is looking a whole lot better so far this year. Last year I would say that Iowa did a pretty good job in the first half defensively but to say that it was a dominating performance is a bit of a stretch since the game did go down to the wire. I think that Iowa can win by multiple touchdowns this year but wouldn't put money on it.

My personal rule is to selectively bet on Iowa as more than a 3 pt. favorite, and NEVER EVER bet on Iowa when a 8+ point favorite. They have a way of making any game close.

The flip side is usually true as well. If Iowa is a 8 pt dog or more, I like betting Iowa, as they have a way of keeping a game within 7 points.

That's not a bad rule. Any Hawk fan who bets knows Iowa will burn ya when they are big favorites. Best to just stay away.

My all time favorite bets are on Iowa getting 7 or more points. I think the only time I bet on Iowa giving points was the 2009 Outback bowl against South Carolina, and again last year against ISU. Won both of them, but was thinking at the time I'm just making a "homer bet" here.
