INTERESTING!

I would like to clarify that I don't want our players to get bad grades AND sexually assault people.

Who were the Illinois prep starters? Boatright - Aurora, Il. ...who else?
Nolan is from Milwaukee. Napier is from Mass. Daniels is from Ca.

Harrisons and Randle are from Tx.
Young is from Michigan
Johnson is from Brooklyn.

As I see it, there is only one Illinois starter between the two.

A four year athletic scholarship is worth about $125000 or more at Iowa. they are paid for with donation and other general monies and student/athletes are supposed to be at least taking core classes and classes for a degree.

I dont care if they are getting a teaching degree and want to teach PE because that is a really good career. We need great teachers and coaches to help out young kids.

Fine if they are getting a degree in Leisure studies, etc but they should be making good progress toward a degree.

I dont blame Kentucky because they are playing within the rules, I THINK.

I get the feeling there are some on here that should consider following the NBA rather than Iowa. Lack of character, no academics, paying players, etc. are for professional basketball players.

Yep, Chris Paul lacks character. Way to stereotype/generalize. Lebron has never been in legal trouble and by all accounts is a great guy.

Hell there have been way worse players on Iowa football and bball teams you have watched and rooted for over the years

Does it have to be either or? Why can't someone follow both? Do u think if the players took finals on the floor at carver, fans would pack it in?

Worse than who ? David Robinson ? Dennis Roddman ?

So, if I get what some are saying, recruiting 1-and-done players isn't "the right way" now, either? Thank goodness Iowa's program isn't like that... I'd rather lose than have all those NBA lottery picks staining our program. I truly believe that some people feel that way. Can't say I understand it, but whatever makes them happy I guess.

It sucks that UK gets all of the top talent, and I don't have to like it, but that's a different discussion.. Say what you want about John Calipari (we all know he's shady), but kudos to UK for having the kind of program that gets that kind of talent.

As for the "character" debate.. I highly doubt that any player in the NBA who doesn't have character, actually HAD character when he was in college or high school. If you don't have it in your 20's or 30's, you probably didn't have it when you were younger, either. I'll wager that a pretty long list of college players lacking in character could be put together.

i find it hilarious that people think fran should be landing the same level of talent at iowa within 5 years that kentucky, kansas, uconn, michigan state, duke or north carolina can.

these are the same people that hate kirk because he doesn't recruit like tOSU, florida, texas, alabama, or florida state do.

exactly. delusional is one word that comes to mind.

I don't recall anyone saying that in this thread.. This whole discussion was basically about whether or not we should put a lot of effort into getting IA recruits, and whether we should be more concerned with academics & character than on-court results.

I agree that we cant recruit overall like those teams. It is a vicious circle type of argument where you have to get one stud, then maybe a couple more big recruits will want to come and play with that big stud, then you get like kentucky and duke where they get 3-4 every year.

I would just like Fran to get that first one, that big time high school all american to start off with.

Imagine with what we have coming back if we also had a sophomore stud coming back

Nice try! I was saying character (and academics) aren't a requirement to play in the NBA.

Let me say that I am pretty happy with the way recruiting has been going. I like that Fran is getting visits from 4* out-of-state prospects (a VERY good sign IMO), and he seems aggressive with going out of state to get more athletic players. Still have to seal the deal, but it looks like we're getting more interest from out of state recruits compared to a few years ago, as opposed to just in-state guys.

I feel Iowa is on the verge of having as good of talent as we've seen since Raveling's recruits graduated. Big statement, but I feel optimistic about this program (although some of my recent comments may not give that impression).

You look at UK, and it's 5* players across the board in every class. Not gonna happen here and I get that, but it doesn't have to. Just look at Wisconsin - in the FF this year without a lot of 4-5* players. But if Iowa can do well at finding undervalued 3* players and grab a 4* player here and there, then I don't think we need worry much about a lack of talent.

This thread serves no purpose...including my dumb posts. I deleted all of mine...except the one where I responded to being taken out of context.

You're right. We are basically just arguing theoretical stuff that we have zero control over anyway. When it comes down to it.. Let's just sit back and enjoy the ride, or bang our head into the wall when the Hawks lose.. Whichever happens. I think I spend too much energy on it.

I like Fran and think he's getting the job done, and will continue to do so. That's what really matters, right? :)

UCONN was banned from the tournament last year because of poor academics. Anyone think the Iowa administration would let that fly?

I personally like to see some Iowa kids on the roster. It would be really nice to keep the Hinrich, Collison, Lafrentz, Barnes, Paige, etc from leaving the state and add some Chicagoland talent. It's getting better every year

This is a very big point. Think how different Iowa Hoops history would be if those guys are Hawks. Huge
