Interesting quote from Stanley at the combine

I have known two football coaches, personally, over the years. They both said the same thing, "Every football practice is designed around developing the OBs, nothing else matters. The other positions all adjust their practice time based on the OB needs: play adjustments, reading defenses, accuracy, touch, technique, etc."

Reading this caused me to let out a Kirk Ferentz snort. Nothing else matters. Right.

My exposure to coaches is limited but it is interesting that both said the same thing. And then hearing talk about "not having time" to coach the Qbs." Stanley's numbers went down each year he was "Iowa coached" so that might be worth taking a look at. Maybe put the short side sweep practice reps on hold for a while. Ok, off tackle, right/left, we got that one. Let's work on some "mid-range touch passes" today.

Were these coaches running passing offenses or pro style? It would make a difference in your focus.

Also, you might want to look up Stanley's stats. He improved every year (not a whole lot, though) except for TD passes, which losing Fant and Hockenson may have had something to do with.

Given the years they coached, they were not the high octane passing attacks we see today.

To hear, "we just don't have much time to work with the QBs" doesn't wring true to me. What is more important that you are doing? Iowa's offensive complexity is about a 15 Wonderlich...

I thought his completion percentages dropped, but I could be wrong. That is a big stat for drafting appeal.

Per The Athletic, Stanley had the worst year of NFL QB rating his last year. (88.5)

In defense of Nate, we should go back and figure in how many catchable passes were dropped by his recievers, then update his completion percentage. Just sayin'.

As I said, his stats besides TD's went up every year. The QB rating dropped due to not having Fant and Hockenson at tight end, ergo fewer TD's and lower rating. Though you could blame that on his inability to hit receivers that weren't 6' 5".

Per ESPN:

Stanley's rating went 135, 136, 131 (2017-2019)

TDs 26, 26, 16

Lots of balls were dropped, not sure how that compares to other QBs and their ratings.

I don't think that his completion stats are padded/helped much by little dump passes that are so common.

I wonder what percentage of Stanley's passes to open targets were "not in the same zip code" variety? I would think that would be high and a reason for concern for scouts.

I believe he has some nice upside given the right team and coaching.

Agree. A lot of teams/QBs throw safe sideways short passes on early downs. We didn't do a ton of that. We do more PA with more 3rd and long type of tougher to complete throws. I bet he has a higher percentage of those attempted then most. We often ran the ball on 1st and 2nd down making it 3rd and 7. There's no cookie cutter way of just measuring overall stats up against each QB.

Kirkball is hyper low risk, punting, work for field position, field goal, don't give up the big play defense, don't turn it over. It isn't designed for high octane plays up and down the field with the higher risk of turnovers which enhance QB stats.. The QB is in a "restrictor plate" event.

Stanley has more potential than what he has shown. Good arm, big, smart, hard worker, good team member.

Concerns: crazy wild passes, below average "touch," slow thinker in the moment, not much es-capability.

I see him as a possible steal for someone.

Two cents.
