Interesting portal data/chart

CFB goes to the Div III model. Limited scholarships & transfers for student athletes.
They get paid a modest ($35,000 ?) salary to play + room and board.

A new 'intermediate' league forms for athletes looking to play football between high school and NFL.
They are the NFL model. Contracts & salary caps.

Everybody is happy!
Colleges return to the business of being academic institutions. Who play football.
ESPN has a whole new FB league to sell.

This is cute. Institutions that are getting 50 million a year from the current model will give that up so they can go back to focusing on grading papers? Not the way the world works.

The fact that Michigan and Alabama have a total of only 2 guys in the portal at this point is amazing, for a variety of reasons.

The #s are trash bee. Pointless to look at any data with incomplete seasons.

When does the portal "close"? I mean, think it would be tough to leave a team that's in the playoffs with a chance at a title. Even if you aren't sniffing the field. Why wouldja announce it now instead of waiting it out for a chance at being part of a title. Then enter the portal.

I think it's partly because they're in the CFP and who wouldn't want to compete in that?

Correct. And lost in the discussion is the fact that the only reason, the absolute only reason that there is a viable economic market for 18-21 year old football players at all is the brand equity that each school brings to the table. You can't make a semipro league for 18 year olds because it won't even make enough money to cover insurance and travel expenses. I don't mind watching an 18 year old true freshman biff a tackle or alligator arm a pass if I reasonably believe that in 2 years he's gonna be the next Chad Greenway or George Kittle. The vast majority of 18 and 19 year olds suck at high level football, but people tolerate the suckage because they see the upside. The laundry is all that matters in the collegiate game.

Priorities are blinded!

Maybe it's always been that way. You ever heard this:

"And, finally, if you'll permit me, I'd like to make a comment which, in my mind, is indicative, perhaps, of the greater significance of football and sports emphasis in general in this country, and that is: I thank God I was warring on the gridirons of the Midwest and not on the battlefields of Europe. I can speak confidently and positively that the players of this country would much more, much rather struggle and fight to win a Heisman award than a Croix de Guerre."
