Interesting depth chart analysis

From the Broncos new depth chart. I like their analysis about Davis, and whose that Bo Bower guy that made it on the 4 deep?

ILB: Brandon Marshall, Josey Jewell, Keishawn Bierria

The Broncos suddenly have depth at inside linebacker after selecting Jewell in this year’s draft. One of Von Miller’s favorite rookies, Jewell may become a starter sooner rather than later.

ILB: Todd Davis, Zaire Anderson, Joe Jones, Bo Bower
Davis will have to perform well this season if he doesn’t want to lose his job to Jewell. Anderson provides extra depth as the fourth inside linebacker.

Starting to wonder how we finished 8-5 with all of that talent.

We really do need to start scoring more points.....

8-5 against that schedule is borderline top 25, was kind of surprised they didn't end up in the final poll with the bowl win. They played 10 of their 12 games against bowl qualifiers and 5 top 20 teams. I know record is all that matters and I agree with that, but last years 8-5 to me feels like it was actually better then most 8-5 years, maybe even 9-4 years just because of all the great teams they faced.

Iowa's playing style can leave the team susceptible as they play in so many close games. Some years they find a way to eek close games out and end up with a 10-1 or 9-2 record and other years they end up 8-5 losing close games. Many of Ferentz's teams are consistent as far as a talent level on a year to year basis, but just the way the ball drops during some games, a win or a loss.

So to your point, yes, his teams needs to find a way to generate more points to put away the teams they should really handle and to give a better opportunity to squeak out games against formidable opponents. Take a few more chances at times and take the game over.

In most years Iowa is neither as good nor as bad as their record indicates.

That statement is a little ironic coming from a Ferentz family apologist.

Having tons of individual talent on a team and sending a large number of players to the pros but not being even a contender in a P5 conference???

I think you know the answer to your question. All that’s left is the offensive scheme (defense is fine), playcalling, and adjusting to other teams’ gameplans. All three are coaching duties.

Every year you can pretty much chalk up 7-8 wins as a prediction. That seems to be their over/under EVERY SINGLE YEAR. It's the developmental program and style of play that keeps that so consistent. Above 8 is a bonus year and below 8 is a disappointment. It literally is a matter of 1 or 2 close losses or wins that tips the scale either way.

So, Iowa dropping a close game early in the season to the North Dakota's and or Western Michigans of the world is a killer.

And it really comes down to one position, regardless if is player or coaching, the WR position. With just a little more production at the WR position would even more loosen up the running game which in turn would help time of possession and field position, which all plays into Iowa's style. Throw in there the occasional big play and there you have it.

Proud of Bower. He got a lot of flak his first full year as a starter (somewhat deservedly so), but his senior year was definitely his best.

He kind of had an interesting and odd Iowa career. You could definitely see a learning curve as a freshman where struggled a bit but was playing alongside two other young LB's. Then had a pretty solid sophmore year. But, seemed to struggle a bit in his junior year if I remember correctly. Then turned it around and had a solid senior season.

Is that what others remember?

Yeah he did have an odd career.

FR: walk-on to starter
SO: got beat out by 2 guys who rarely played prior(Fisher and Niemann) at OLB, don't remember him playing much that season
JR: started but caught at a lot of heat from fans, including me
SR: pretty solid year

"Ferentz family apologist?" You lack credibility based on your deep hate for all things Ferentz. Your constant cheap shots against the coaching staff are meaningless to me.

You just posted a big analysis on all of the Iowa players that will make, or are in the running for, NFL rosters. Doesn't Ferentz get some credit for that?

This is the correct answer. Fryowa, are you paying attention?

You said you wondered why the Hawks don't win more with such talented players.

I reasoned that the only remaining thing other than playing talent is coaching.

I said it was ironic that you (who has professed your love for the Ferentzes) couldn't figure out that coaching and the offensive scheme/play calling is the problem. What's so hard to understand about that?

My post about 53 man rosters has nothing to do with this thread or winning (or lack thereof) college games.
