Money affects coaches the same as it does players. I don't think there's any loyalty anymore.I was actually somewhat relieved when I heard he shunned Iowa for IU. Any coach that accepts three job offers in one year has questionable integrity IMO. No one can fault him for chasing the money, but at least short-term loyalty has to factor in to a degree. It's a bad look.
Your hypothetical ia missing a key piece to the equation. What's the other offer? Sure everyone would take the 20 mil over nothing. But would everyone take the 20 mill over 10 mil? I would assume most would. How about 20 mil over 15 mil? Or 20 mil over 19 mil. There's other factors also like odds of success. Would you take 20 mil at a place where you would likely be fired after three years over 15 mil at a place where there's a good chance you could make a long run? I personally would take a pretty big pay cut to coach at Iowa over a team I hated. But there's clearly a dollar amount that would pull me away.Money affects coaches the same as it does players. I don't think there's any loyalty anymore.
But let's be honest, if any of us here got a piece of paper pushed across the table at us with that many zeroes on it we'd have done the same thing. People can say all they want how they wouldn't, yadda yadda, but if you're in that conference room sitting at that same table, ain't no way anyone here is going to turn that down.
I hate no team on earth as much as the huskers. Not even close. I wish nothing but misery on that program and their fans. But if I got offered $20 million bucks over 5 years to wear their colors and coach a team I'm signing my name on that dotted line. All of us would. Anyone who says different is a liar.
I've always thought about this. How much different is it to have 15 million over 20 million as far as the lifestyle you live? Does a person say "gee, if I made 20 mill instead of 15, I could buy a nicer house, or save more for retirement, or leave more for the kids, etc." I realize people are desperate for math teachers, but I'm guessing I'll never know.Your hypothetical ia missing a key piece to the equation. I'd start an Instagram page after I got fired that was nothing but me trolling their fans by flying to the Bahamas, smoking big cigars on my deck that nebraska fans paid for, pictures of the Mercedes I just bought my kid, you get the picture.Give me $30 million and you can call me a sleaze too. Hell, I'd even coach at Nebraska, suck, and get fired after 3 years and have everyone in the state of Nebraska hate me for that kind of money. Being the most popular person in the other 49 states after getting fired would have nothing to do with it.
This can't be overstated. People are totally different than what they seem on TV or in interviews. I feel comfortable saying this now because he's an adult and made his own bed, but Brandon Snyder, mister apple pie America Iowa football player is a top 5 douche bag I've ever met and unfortunately after he was done at Iowa I had to deal with him a lot. His dad is even worse so I'll give Brandon 1% slack for being an apple that fell off the tree. I could go on and on, but I've never met a more holier than thou, entitled, hypocritical sack of bones than that dude. Love it when he starts quoting bible verses on twitter. Also, when he "left the team" it wasn't him leaving. After his final fiasco (the second one he got himself into after already coming groveling back to the team all, Jesus this, Jesus that) the Iowa coaches left it up to his teammates to decide if he was welcome. Welp, his own teammates said no, and that says volumes if you know how tight sports teams are and how supportive they are of each other.Having said that, I've played or coached in high school for 37 years and Darian is on of the two biggest pricks I've encountered. In baseball, they were average and we were really good, so were always beat them pretty bad so we were able to throw at him several times (I was a player) over the years. I'm sure he's grown up some, but I just can't cheer for the guy.
My point is that pay cut range is a whole lot smaller than anyone here wants to admit. Including yours if that contract was sitting in front of you.I personally would take a pretty big pay cut to coach at Iowa over a team I hated. But there's clearly a dollar amount that would pull me away.
There's a handful of reasons for coaches to leave 1 job for another and often times those reasons bleed togetherI was actually somewhat relieved when I heard he shunned Iowa for IU. Oh, I get it. Take what you can get when you can.Money affects coaches the same as it does players. I don't think there's any loyalty anymore.

I get the Indiana job, but the WVU job really made me shake my head. It seemed like a pretty random school for him to go to. Not big time, not geographical, not blue blood, almost like an Alford to New Mexico, McDermott to Creighton, except there was no reason for him to leave Drake except for money, which wasn't even that great, relatively speaking.I think it's fair to question a guy who's taken 3 jobs in 3 years. It's suspect, even when you are chasing millions and the job you want. As someone who hires 10+ people a week, I can assure you I judge everyone by how many jobs they have a take and more isn't better.
Also, think about this. Devries hasn't won an NCAA game. Not 1. He somehow took the Drake gig, didn't win a game in the postseason, lobbied that into a better job at WV, where he didn't even MAKE the tournament and now he's coaching Indiana.
That's a huge risk for Indiana. It wasn't for Iowa. He's going to fail.
An insider site said he wasn't offered the job. There were several that were talked to, some that were surprising in good and bad ways.Do we even know if Devries was offered the Iowa job? Even if Goetz wanted to interview him (did interview him?) do we know anything other than he was a likely candidate?
Iowa isn't talking. And any agent is going to spin a situation to make it appear as if their client is the preferred choice of as many schools as possible.
He was chasing the $$ and prestige and IMO, he's not worth it with his resume. He's not worth buying out for sure IMO - like, pay 5 million just to get him worthy? Not IMO. Alford had a S16, Lick had 2. McCollum already has more post season success then Devries ever had and he doesn't cost $5 million to even just get to town. I feel confident Iowa might have dodged one here.I get the Indiana job, but the WVU job really made me shake my head. It seemed like a pretty random school for him to go to. Iowa never talked to Devries. He never came here, never expressed interest, neither did Iowa. It's smoke. Dochterman talked about it on a pod as well.He was chasing the $$ and prestige and IMO, he's not worth it with his resume. And I am ok with it. I do consume pretty much everything scott does, and had not heard this thoughIowa never talked to Devries. He never came here, never expressed interest, neither did Iowa. It's smoke. Dochterman talked about it on a pod as well.
It was just a thing where people/media thought he'd be a good fit because he was from Iowa (which doesn't mean anything), and it got made into a big deal.
