In-State OL Trevor Downing Sees Iowa Again, Decision Expected Soon

Why is it that Iowa doesn't offer AG related majors anyway? I've always wondered that. All that liberal arts crap is ok I guess but come on. Iowa is the heart of agriculture and the largest state run university doesn't have anything to do with it just about... The fact that ISU is the AG school with no competition sucks.

The board of regents decides about majors at each University. They do not want duplication of specialized majors and competition between Universities that are all "on the same team" (all being funded by the same tax dollars).

Iowa doesn't offer any specific AG majors, but they have ANF on the helmets. Suck on that, Cyclones; maybe you educate them, but you don't need them.

Seriously, I give the kid credit. He's looking out for his future, which he no doubt recognizes is likely in the ag business, not in football. He should go to a school that will best prepare him, as he sees it, for that future. The fact that he'll play for an inferior football team doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things for him. Actually, it's a pretty level-headed decision.

Congrats to the clowns. Hopefully nothing bad happens but it seems like every ISU offensive lineman has to deal with a lot of injuries. They just don't know how to teach and develop players. I see cydcar showed up. It's only on the rare occasion that he shows up. He's probably going to tell us some obscure recruiting site lists Dowling as a 5 star.

Look up the history of land grant colleges and how ISU fits into that history. They were essentially founded as an agricultural school. Some were also in the category, "schools of mines" which has evolved into engineering.

I think it's all that matters. He'll PLAY for an inferior team instead of the fear of riding the bench at Iowa.

The odds of him changing his major are like any other Freshman...about 90%+ that he changes one or more times in his four years, so to go to a school just for what he thinks right now he wants to study??
Hope he gets some solid advice from his family, because so many young people legitimately don't know what they want to do in life. Good thing is He's got nothing but time.
If he looks at the big picture he'll stay clear of Ames and become a Hawkeye!

Pff that's an excuse. Most all universities offer the same and most popular ones so why only the 'specialized' ones are more important? The Universities are in non stop competition for students. It's why they all pay for advertising. Well maybe the Ivy league schools don't have to but most public ones sure due. To say that's a line in the sand where they don't want them competing for students doesn't fly. They are in a constant state of competition for kids of all majors. To prioritize majors and say well AG is so important to ISU that they should get exclusitivity to it isn't right. If Iowa, UNI, or Morningside for that matter want to have AG related majors they all should. For crying out loud the country/state should have more of that not less.

Wut? ISU is the larger school.
Are they? I figured Iowa was. I'm sure it's close whatever the enrollments are. But it's not the overarching point I was trying to make. My point is Iowa is the heart of farm country and for the Iowa state to have a monopoly on AG majors doesn't make sense. Iowa should have them too. Their should be more AG related courses available all over the Midwest not less for the countries sake not just Iowa.

cytwins had this to say after Downing committed to little brother.

This staff is absolutely amazing.

I guess there's about 125 amazing staffs in division 1 football because they signed a 3 star also.

I think the idea is if there are x-number of state of Iowa students that want to major in ag, and that number will not be changed if only ISU offers Ag-based majors vs. ISU and Iowa. However, it will cost the state more to support that major at both schools then just at one. So why spend more money to serve the same # of students? I suppose you could make some argument as to how offering such majors at 2 institutions might have benefits, but that would be speculative, and spending from a limited pool to achieve speculative gains is a tough sell.
