Impressive Hawkeye Recruiting

Iowa is aggressively offering 4 and 5 star recruits in both basketball and football. It seems that the early offers may pay off for both sports. Nice to see the variety of players from the east, south and midwest. I think this might be the year we get by some of the blue bloods for recruits. Good times ahead.

Yes, Fran is going after some good talent, which is always good to see. Let's see who actually commits, though. It's pretty tough to recruit out of state when other good programs are offering, too. Not trying to be a negative nellie, just trying to be realistic. I'm hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised.

At least we seem to get more interest under Fran than we did with Lick, when it was like "Eh, thanks but no thanks".

Offering kids isn't impressive. Getting highly ranked or good kids to sign is. Lets not put the cart before the horse here.
I do agree with you Dean. However, there is a certain level of confidence in making these kind of offers. This is not something that could have even been done when Fran first got here coming of the dark days... It seems like a step in the right direction. And Fran did get Cook into the black and gold.

Don't be so negative. Offering these kids is one thing, but what is changing is these recruits are actually interested. They all won't sign of course but if we can get 1 or 2 top 100 recruits every cycle we will be in the driver seat of winning B1G championships. The crazy thing is we are actually getting intrest from top 50 kids. Getting that level of talent will absolutely change the program for the best. This is as close of a reality now then it has ever been in my lifetime. Be optimistic. The disappointment may sting, but you will be happier in the mean time.

Well it's an impressive list of recruits but I agree with Dean. I'll really be impressed with Fran when he lands one of these guys.

Tyler Cook is an impressive get though.

Maybe, but to use a golf analogy - 100% of the putts that are short don't go in the hole. 100% of the recruits you don't offer a scholarship to will not attend your school.

If you look at some of his last signings - you can see that the trend has already turned to a more quality type of commit. Cook, Garza, Connor and Joe W - all 4 stars.

Fran's rimmed a few putts out as well, unfortunately, like Ulis.

Yeah...agreed, this is a little like the prospect list a salesman gives his boss. He's never talked to them, but he'd love to do business with them.

I don't really blame Fran for Ulis. If Calipari comes a calling with a starting spot on the line 95% of prospects would pick Kentucky over anyone else unless there was location issue. Just the way of the world.

It's not like that at all. Fran has talked to all of them and they all expressed interest in taking a meeting to discuss potentially doing business. Those are called solid leads.

Does Brian Ferentz approve?

Ulis was going to Michigan State if he didn't go to Kentucky. He already said that

Sounds like Fran's actually talked to the kids and they've at least expressed interest in exploring Iowa. Not like M. Campbell throwing as much spaghetti on the wall as possible and hoping some of it sticks.
I think Fran is doing a very good job recruiting, but let's not be hypocritical. Fran seems to have adapted to the new age style of recruiting.

Here is what I like. Fran and his staff already have the 2018 cycle completed and already have a top 100 kid (at least) for 2019.

Other schools are still recruiting the 2018 cycle where our staff can focus all of their time and resources on 2019 and beyond, which is an advantage. The first step is the offer and opening up the communication, which it appears we have done. The next step, and I think the most important, will be getting some of these kids to visit.

As others have mentioned we are casting a wide net, but all we have to do is hit on one maybe two of these guys and we can have a phenomenal recruiting class. There appears to be some in state talent out there too and I have no problem with Fran taking a flyer on a diamond in the rough type prospect with the last scholarship if necessary. He has a pretty good track record with that.

I hope to an extent Patrick can help recruit some of these kids or at least open up some communication. It wouldn't hurt if Iowa had a great season this year either!
