Impressions of the Iowa Sate Game last night

Since it was a week off for the Hawks, a friend of mine and I decided to go to the game in Ames. Here's my impressions; the tailgating atmosphere was OK but it did have the feel of sitting in a Walmart parking lot for me. There's no trees and buildings close by and you're out in the open - just didn't do for me. I did get to spend some time with a great former Hawkeye who played in the 90's. He happended to be at the tailgate that we got invited to. This made my day and it was fun to be able to talk Hawkeye football at an Iowa State game.

The game itself was definately lacking in atmosphere. Iowa State uses a lot of "gimmickry" to try and get the crowd involved. The fog, the siren and the "there's another Cyclone First Down" chant seemed very small time and gave the game an Arena Football feel. The music absolutely sucked - its all hip-hop and rap - not music that the typical Iowan really listens to or even relates to. I guess they're trying to be cutting edge but I'm not sure that's the best way to do it.

The one positive is their new video screen is awesome! It's a hideously large structure overall and is over-bearing over the stadium but the graphics are great. I found myself watching the game on the screen quite a lot instead of watching it live. Another cool thing they did was before the game, they let a bunch of little kids out on the field and they stayed out there during the National Anthem and when the Clowns came out onto the field. That's got to be a great memory for those little kids and would be a great addition to Kinnick pregame. I thought it was a nice touch.

I woke up this morning with a headache and I'm not sure if it was from drinking too much or seeing far too much red and yellow together - those two colors shouldn't be seen on anything simultaneously except on a hot dog!

Overall, I would give the experience a 5 out of ten. To me, nothing beats the atmosphere of Iowa City and Kinnick on game day but I'm biased. It's a ten in my book.

Where did you tailgate at? Most fans of opposing teams say they enjoy our tailgating a lot since everyone is in the same area and it is like a big party. If you were in the donor lots, then I can see the tailgating for that being lame. If you do go again, I would suggest going to what they call the student lot (not just for students, its where most people under 30 go).

Been to Jack Trice a few times.

There tailgating is pretty solid, but the game day atmosphere just doesn't do it for me.

Reminds me too much of a minor league baseball game.

Why is that? I have never heard of this correlation.
I am biased obviously and love the open grass lot feel of the TG around JTS. I rarely here opposing fans say any different.

I was at Jack Trice last night. I don't mind tailgating there. I have a bunch of friends that have an RV there, and they are a good group. They root for the Hawks and I root for the Cyclones.

That said, the "FIRST DOWN" thing bugs the sh!t out of me. Seems like a high school thing to do. The other thing I notice every time I am there, is the fans b!tch, moan, and complain about the officials on every single play. I know every fan base does this to a certain extent, but the Clones take it to another level. It wasn't one or two fans around me, it was my friends, and the whole section complaining about everything. The fans see a hold on every Texas run, and every penalty on ISU is complete BS according to them. Even the block punt the fans were saying the Texas guy hit the punter first, then the ball, so it should be a flag! What is that? The student section chanted f*ck the refs, and it was audible in the whole stadium.

If you take away those two gripes I have, and I usually have a good time at the Cyclone games.

football IQ really, really low at clown dome. they aren't used to watching much of it - as you'll see as the season progresses.

also - nothing like firing up the tornado siren for a TD that didn't count. classy high school ambiance.

"...not music that the typical Iowan really listens to or even relates to."

Well, clown fans are not typical Iowans...that pretty much sums it up doesn't it?

You and Vintage probably knit together in a shed in the woods when ISU loses.

Don't kid yourself folks, fans in Kinnick are just as bad as far as booing the refs.

I worked at a minor league baseball stadium during the summers for two years in high school. They play all kinds of music and have all kinds of little gimmicks to keep fans into the game.

The comparison is probably a bit extreme, but that's the first thing that came to mind.

Don't misunderstand me, Jack Trice is a solid place to watch a college football game, there's definitely worse. (NW, Purdue, Indiana)

Who knows, maybe I just wasn't at the right game for an atmosphere.

Our fans do complain officials way to much! It drives me nuts. Last night fans around me where yelling for 12 men on the field when there wasn't. They were also yelling at the officials b/c they thought the spots were bad. It was annoying and frankly a little uneducated and childish.

I like the 1st down thing but I get why others wouldn't. I hate the Case I H redzone

I live close to ames and work in ames. I kinda like it tailgateing there and not haveing to look over your shoulder for a cop. There is more fredom to move around there. If you did go to there games a lot of the fans dont even have faith in there team. I went to the utha game last year and everyone walked out at halftime. 68-3 i dont remember it was ugly.

Few things are more miserable than being around fans that complain incessantly re officiating and just generally don't know much about the game, and resultantly make ignorant comments throughout a game. And make no mistake - every fanbase has a subset that ***** incessantly re officiating and fans that simply don't know what they're talking about. Every fanbase also has it's share of kneejerk reactionaries that when things aren't going well, Coach X needs fired and/or Player Y needs benched.

I try to go to a ISU game every year. Usually early before things have fallen apart and weather is good. Tailgating is fine. I don't care for gimmicks to make noise. I pull for Clones when not playing Iowa despite number of stupid comments about Iowa by some of their fans. We have plenty of fans also making stupid comments.

Are you implying the same threads that appear on CF after a loss appear on HN?
No way! Please send a memo to VintageHawkeye, and Imported_Ankle.

The following tweet from ESPN sideline reporter Samantha Steele stood out to me: “Believe it or not, this is one of the best gameday environments I’ve ever seen. Sooo loud in here right now!!”
