Yes. The amount of bowl games has spun out of control and many lesser known ones are sparsely atteneded and being played by mediocre teams.
Time to allocate that money elsewhere. They can work games around final exams. For student athletes who actually take them.
The 1976 Iowa State team under Earle Bruce would have been a dangerous out in a sixteen team postseason format. Instead, they didn't even get a bowl bid.
That's my whole point. The Big 8 was the best conference in the country that year and Iowa State finished 8-3 playing in that conference. They were second in the nation in total offense and up there in forced turnovers as well.Wow, you really went back in history for that one.
You mean the 1976 ISU squad that was not even the AP top 20 in the final regular season poll on Nov 30 and then snuck in at #19 in the final poll in Jan poll? The ISU squad that was ranked behind Ok, Neb, Col and OkSt in the Big 8 conference? Even with 16 teams, I could not see ISU sneaking in.
where the playoff is 8 or 16 teams and level of interest at this point in season. Fever pitch. So much $ to be made.

They had wins over #7 Missouri and #9 Nebraska. They were definitely one the top 15 teams in the nation.
Noticed I said "they" not "we". If I have to point out after over 2,000 posts where my alleigencies lie then I'm the dumbest poster on this board. I was just trying to give credit to a team that deserved more.
Iowa State was mathematically alive for an Orange Bowl bid after beating Nebraska. The Bluebonnet Bowl (at the Astrodome and now defunct) was set to pick ISU as well.Disagree. Last game of the year, ISU lost 42-21 at #16 Oklahoma State. If they win that game, they may have been deserving of a bowl game (OSU got the Tangerine Bowl vs BYU).
Yep, 8 is enough. No need to be like the NFL where some real crap teams can get in.8 is absolutely perfect. 16 starts to water down the conference season a bit. At the current time, every single weeks game has importance. I don't want to lose that in college football.
Wait, why are you bringing up the Clowns?Yes. The amount of bowl games has spun out of control and many lesser known ones are sparsely atteneded and being played by mediocre teams.

I did, you brought up the Clowns in the second post. You should take this to Cyfan though, it would be hilarious to see how many of them you can convince to push for claiming a national championship for that season.Read the rest of the thread!
You went to far Northside Hawk! It's cryfan! HehehheIowa State was mathematically alive for an Orange Bowl bid after beating Nebraska. The Bluebonnet Bowl (at the Astrodome and now defunct) was set to pick ISU as well.
The OSU loss that you mentioned crushed them. And Nebraska ended up getting ISU's Bluebonnet bid as well. They key to all this is that only about twelve bowl games existed back then. That's what really screwed ISU.
I'm off this soapbox, gang. Lots of good opinions. I'll leave it up to Cyclone Nation to pick it up from here if they choose to do so. But I'll leave you with this. Remember the 1978 season? Nebraska beat Oklahoma for traditional Orange Bowl bid, despite the fact that Oklahoma was better and better that day. Eight lost fumbles on a cold windy Lincoln day doomed the Sooners. But guess what? The Orange Bowl set up a rematch, and Oklahoma won. You want to get an old time Nebraska fan going, bring up 1978.

If they do this we have to quit pretending they are amateurs. 15 games? Time to pay them.
