I'm sold. CJ Beathard should start the rest of the season.

Yes it was Purdue and they aren't good but CJ made some insanely good throws in tight windows again today. The pick 6 was bad but we all knew CJ was going to make mistakes. The key is despite a rocky 1st half and some drops that were not on him, he came back and sparks some nice drive. Both his deep pass compilations (the TD to KMM and the other pass to Powell) were things of beauty. CJ also showed his mobility today and threw another dart under pressure when he got hit.

There is no question he should be the starter from here on out. Let him take snaps with the #1's and ride those locks. The sky is the limit with Beathard.

Kirk mentions Jake again while talking about CJ.

Honestly, after today I still think Ferentz thinks their is a controversy. The first half will give him reason to think that.

Not totally sure of that. Had the pick 6, some audible issues, some bad passes, and held ball too long at times. Not saying CJB played bad. These are just things that can go against him becoming they starter in two weeks.

There is zero doubt in my head who the QB should be. There is zero doubt in my head who will start in 2 weeks. And they ain't the same person.

I think if Jake had played today, it would have been a 24 or 31 to 3 game. Jake has his strengths and is probably slightly better in the aggregate (obviously far less proficient with the deep ball, though), but I think we've seen Jake's ceiling and that ceiling is going to keep us at roughly the 8 win level. CJ clearly has a materially higher ceiling than Jake and with reps could become a truly special QB. If he develops, we could have a chance to win out if the D keeps improving and we work out some kinks on offense. This team has looked really good in the second half the past two weeks. If we can get a complete game, we're as good as Wisconsin and Nebraska (provided the D can contain Abdullah and Gordon).

I just don't see what you guys are seeing. CJ had a pretty rough game, especially in the first half.

17/37. Under 50%.

And before you blame the drops, most of those were because CJ always throws the fastball. His passes are not easy to catch. He's going to break receivers fingers. He's going to get passes tipped at the line because he doesn't put enough air under a lot of this throws.

Today he checked down past several open receivers, just like you always complain about how Jake does. He's going to try to force a lot of passes, and today you saw the pick 6 as a result.

Yes, CJ does some nice things, but overall I simply don't see him as an obvious upgrade from Jake. I think we can win with either guy, frankly.

Purdue is a bad team. Jake could have easily piloted a 14 point win today.

I agree with the last sentence and that Jake, with 16 career starts, is better than CJ, who has now played approximately 2 full games. The one thing CJ gives us is an absolutely gifted arm at dropping the ball in sweetly on deep passes - Jake lacks that. The issues with CJ can improve with reps, but Jake's arm on deep balls is never gonna improve. That's why I see CJ bringing a higher ceiling. Notwithstanding the chatter on here, Kurt has a tough call.

Beathard=equals biggers plays, but more mistakes
Rudock=less biggers plays, less mistakes
Coaching Staff=Play calls that can effect both QBs.

I would say a slight edge to CJ today based on performance. I must admit, I was not overly impressed with CJ today, but I still like the fact he can stretch the field in ways Jake can't.

Right. But Jake has hit his ceiling. CJ has a long way to go up. He might never get there, but he certainly wont if he doesn't play.

It could have been gamesmanship also to keep the Goophers guessing. We've got 2 weeks to prepare for those schmucks. CJ didn't do anything today that proved: 1) he shouldn't start and, 2) JR is only even with CJ, at best. CJ looks like he could blossom into an elite qb. When he gains experience and very few things from defenses surprise him, he could become a surgeon on the field. Wouldn't that be ironic?

You weren't impressed because he was a guy starting his first game on the road in the Big Ten. He still has timing issues with the receivers bince practice is skewed heavily toward the QB1 getting virtually all reps with the first team offense. We can all point to errors CJ made, but there isn't one that sticks out in my mind as something that can't be corrected.

In my line of work we use the phrase "going broke safely." That is Rudock, safe isnt going to get this team where it needs to be.

No gamesmanship. Kurts decision was made last year.

I agree except we have 6 weeks for that game, Rodents game isn't until Nov 8th. KF will have 6 weeks of gamesmanship, so that could get really get scary for everyone.. :)

Correct. We are really not that good of a football team. We have now played approximately 5 good quarters of football all year. But we seem to be improving. Our side is weak enough that if we can get to 6 wins we can have a shot at the title and if we see incremental week over week improvement like we saw back in 2002-2004 and in 2008-09 coupled with better QB play, we could still win our side of the conference. We're also bad enough to finish 2-6 or 3-5, though, so I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but for us to have a chance to get 6 or 7 BT wins, we gotta go with CJ. With Jake, I see us getting 4, maybe 5 and being 7-5 or 8-4, in the ballpark of last season. Given our schedule, I'd hope we can be better than that.

And for the record, going broke safely means failing to buy a variable annuity and riding the stock market way up - you buy a low commission fixed annuity and take the safe route, you'll go broke, but safely.
