Gary Barta has done a very good job at Iowa. During Barta's tenure Iowa has made significant improvements to the the athletic facilities.
In September 2009, Iowa dedicated the new $7 million boathouse, a 20,000-square-foot facility built on the bank of the Iowa River on Dubuque Street in Terrill Mill Park. In addition to the UI Rowing team, the building houses the UI men's club rowing team and the Old Capitol Rowing Club, a community-based rowing organization. I think it is a waste of money, but many people are thrilled with the facility & it has brought Iowa national recognition.
Just over one-year ago Iowa broke ground on the multi-million dollar addition and renovation of Carver-Hawkeye. The project will improve the practice, strength training, and conditioning facilities for many winter sports programs. In addition, the project will provide new office space for Iowa's administrative and coaching staffs. New locker rooms and support facilities for Iowa's men's and women's basketball, wrestling and volleyball teams also are included in the project.
The project also upgrades the spectator area of the Arena including new courtside seating and club rooms.
This year Iowa will break ground on an addition to the football facilities used by the Iowa football program during the 2010-11 year. The project will include the construction of a new indoor practice facility, upgraded and improved locker rooms, team rooms, strength and conditioning facilities, and spaces used for the day-to-day operation of the football program. A new outdoor practice facility also will be constructed.
Now for a few questions & answers.
Would the public be better informed if Barta had attended the press conference? No!
Would the players have received better care if Barta had attended the press conference? No!
Was Barta working? Yes! He was attending an Iowa Alumni Association event. Anyone who has been involved in multi-million dollar business deals or has had to raise millions of dollars for a project knows that a lot of these deals are done on a golf course.
Of course, if a booster asked for his 3$ million back because Barta didn't attend the press conference, Iowa could have a problem. Barta was working for the long-term benefit of Iowa athletics. Maybe we will get the north zone renovated. Who knows.
"It's all about the money!"
Please, will somebody explain to me, what Barta would have accomplished at the press conference?
