If you could have any player from the Ferentz era...

...to pluck and put on this year's team, who would it be?

* Obviously Dallas Clark would be intriguing (now THAT would be a passing attack).
* Bob Sanders would make almost any team better.
* Shonn Greene would be great as well.

But I think I'd go with the 2009 version of Adrian Clayborn, as he was so dominate and immediately shore up the DL. 2003 Matt Roth wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Thoughts?

Actually, Kirksey is playing well at the WILL. Chad was great, but his position isn't one where there is a huge problem. Now, if Neilson can't get right, Edds might be a good choice.

Mitch King playing right next to Daniels (no disrespect to Nardo he is fine player) would put some good heat opposing teams

Brad freaking Banks

Banks used to have years to throw. Watch some of the old video. That line was so dominant, he would just sit back there and wait for someone to break open. If they didn't, huge running lanes would open up.

Banks would not be close to as effective with this line.

Kirksey is playing well but Greenway played with so much more intensity and fire. The guy made sure that if you caught the ball over the middle you earned the catch from pop he gives you. Plus even as a weakside backer, he caused a lot of chaos in the backfield and at the line. It sucks that hes going to waste away in Minnesota, kinda like Robert Gallery did in Oakland for his whole career until this year which he will now probably see the playoffs because that division is so terrible.

Edit: Now thinking about Gallery I would take him for an Offensive player and Greenway for Defensive.

I don't know if the rest of the line is quite big enough for Mitch to be as effective as he was later in his Iowa career. Early in his career, teams would gash Iowa up the middle. Things changed when he got more bulk around him.

No way Seattle makes the playoffs. San Fran is going to win that division. Actually, Oakland has a much better shot at making the playoffs.

Still wouldn't point to WILL as the area of most need, which is how I would choose the player I would pick.

well which one will they double team? Either way one will have to be blocked one on one. King played right next to Kroul who didnt have great size, Iowa usually dont have a big line

Good start to your list. I think you have to remember the impact on defense that guys like Chad Greenway, Matt Roth, Mitch King made. They made an offense have to change their game plans dramatically. I would probably put Robert Gallery up there as well.

bringing in 09 clayborn on this team would be no different than last season. teams would double him and chip him with a running back.

if you want a defensive lineman, i'd go with a tackle personally.

but i'm still sticking with spievey. prater and him locking down receivers allows the defense to blitz a little more and force pressure on the quarterback

But there are some other great Hawkeyes that made a difference. Kaeding on special teams? I know not going to make lists, but could one say that his game winning FG in the Alamo Bowl was a turning point for Iowa football?? I wouldl ike to have put Clayborn on that list, but, although I was fairly young I remember Roth being a bigger force. I know Clayborn 1st rounder with better potential, but in college Roth was so disruptive.
