series, who would you choose?

Prior to our debacle in the desert, I was all about playing Cal/UCLA....well, I no longer think that is a good idea. My new policy: no teams west of the Rockies. My top 10:

1. Florida State
2. Miami
3. Tennessee
4. Notre Dame (Wish they'd just join the Big Ten so we'd get regular shots at them)
5. Georgia
6. Auburn
7. Boston College
8. Clemson
9. North Carolina
10. Texas A&M
 
1. Oklahoma
2. Boise State
3. Notre Dame
4. Clemson
5. Texas
6. Florida
7. Florida State
8. Alabama
9. Pittsburgh
10. Oregon State (I know that goes against your policy, but I really like watching the Beavers)
 
1) Oklahome (will never happen because Bob Stoops won't schedule Iowa, only will play Iowa in a bowl game

2) Notre Dame

3) LSU

4) Florida

5) West Virginia

6) Va Tech

7) Florida State

8) Boise State

9) Oregon

10) Bama

11) Texas

12) USC

Of course I'm biased because i moved to Benbrook (SW Fort Worth) last year & I think that these are all winnable games on a regular basis too, little risk good recruiting emphasis. It would be fun to see these pu55ies play up north.

I think the teams you refer to as cats would have the advantage I believe you are hinting at with the 'up north' comment. they'd be non conference, so it wouldn't be cold in iowa, but would most likely be hot in these areas. advantage southern team.

I think the home and home answer should be a florida team, or an eastern team like rutgers/pittsburgh/syracuse/maryland. other than the midwest, our recruiting seems to take place in florida or east coast. midwestern recruits get a chance to see us play every weekend the way it is.

give up the west coast game. no advantage for iowa to play those games.

I think that you may have a point there, but i have also heard that there may be a 13 game season on the horizon & 2 "open" weeks during the big ten season in which either, but not both, could be used as bye's. Games would start mid august, and go till the beginning of december. If that is the case then you could easily schedule that game in the second half of the season in one of those "open" dates forcing them to play in colder weather. College FB is making people lots of money. For all the same reasons for the NFL to go to 18 games, but no players association to deal with is why it will be done. Plus with this change bowl eligibility would then become 7 wins. With 13 games it makes it much more difficult to be undefeated, allowing the BCS to correct its "non-AQ" problem with forcing at least 4 "BCS" level opponents to be scheduled (2 from a AQ conference). FCS opponents will be dropped from win totals when assessing tie breakers and who gets what bowl. they essentially become a preseason game that could hurt you come selection time. by doing so you allow the schedule and the system to correct it's arch nemesi Boise and TCU.
 
1. Colorado- many fans out here, not that far away, and no chance of looseing

2. TCU- would be an awsome game no matter who wins

3. BYU- don't know why, but it would be nationaly relevant

4. Flordia St.

5. Any SEC team- its always fun beating them

Which are all cupcakes comparable to this:

1. James Madison
2. Jacksonville state
3. Appalachian state
4. UNI
5. South Dakota State.

Imo we would go 1-4 against those teams.

A 13 game schedule is a terrible idea IMO. Mostly because it would further eliminate the chances of ever having a playoff.

If you go to 13 games, I'll guarantee the presidents make the argument that a playoff would then extend the season to "FAR" too many games and they'd never endorse it.

Leave the regular season at 12, then make a playoff system extending beyond the 4 BCS bowl games....that way the good teams still play 15 or so games and we get a true national champ every season (without killing the bowl system).

The big thing would be no FCS schools. 1-takes too much away from the fans, and 2-why play a team like that and pay all that money when there are tons of FBS schools you can just as easily slaughter? I tried picking some away from the deep south just because i know a) its still hot in august/september down there and b) its a whole different culture down there and i frankly dont want to visit for a home-home :)
 
Virginia for a couple of reasons. First, I'm convinced we will never travel west again. Second, this could open up a recruiting pipeline of great talent in that area. Lastly, this would be a game we could win ever year and it's against a BCS school.

Thought I'd be the only one answering UVA on this one. Living in DC and having many friends from UVA around here, I can fairly say that this is a pretty snobby fanbase (albeit, a great school and college town) and I would like nothing more than for Iowa to travel to Charlottesville and show them how its done. Wouldn't even need the Kinnick part of the home-home as far as I am concerned.
 
Virginia probably should have made my top 10....the more I think about that....the more I like the idea.

FWIW, I believe the UI has a policy against scheduling non-conference games against teams with a Native American mascot. It happens sometimes with conference play, tournaments, etc, but I think they try to avoid it.

That's crap if it's true. The Seminole tribe has no problems with FSU's use of and depiction of a Seminole warrior, so why should the University of Iowa?

I really hate Florida thats the reason I want to play them. But in reality to play any of these teams they would have to come farther North the Kentucky, which for someone like Florida has not been done since I think there season opener in like 95 in a dome nonethless in Syracuse.

^that is one of the main reasons WHY THEY WILL go to the 13 game season. to prevent a playoff, add in some scheduling rules and limitations, and you kill the possibility of a playoff which is the ultimate enemy of the BCS. I am a fan of the BCS and want it to stick around, so do the presidents, and so do the players. Playoffs would not work well for the Hawks in my opinion. We would still get the short end of the stick and constantly have the lower seed, forcing us to play tougher opponents earlier.

By having a 13 game season, you also leave open the possibility of a +1 which is the ONLY "playoff" the current system will allow. Then the College football season is at most 15 games and long everybody is happy!
