If there were a moral victory tournament, we would be in

While the OP did ramble a bit.....his initial premise has merit.
(The letting down with 4-5 mins left in the 1st half).

And I'll add, for those of you with hope regarding Iowa's comeback, c'mon now, tOSU went sloppy, played out of control and took their foot way way off the gas. How many turnovers did that guard have? 5-6?

My initial observations I think still hold true:
#1--we play better against teams who don't run/gun (less athletic if you will), and
#2--we definitely need a player or two to step up when Marble is shut down offensively. Teams are keying on him, daring the other 4 starters to beat them....it seems to be working.

At some point McCaffrey and this team need to figure some things out. Let's start with finishing the first half. It is a given there will be a complete meltdown at the 6:00 mark in the first half. Tonight's debacle was a new low, giving up what, 6 points in 20 seconds? It's like someone pushes a button and every guy on the team loses their freaking mind. Next we have the shooters who cannot shoot. Without being too ghoulish here, how has McCaffrey assembled a team of non shooters like this? For a coach who wants to run and score points, I would think it would start with recruiting guys who fit that type of system. We maybe have 2 guys capable of finishing in transition ( by this I mean not going weak to the hoop and getting blocked). I am sure someone tracks this, but we have to be leading the big ten in weak a%% layups getting blocked. Woodbury and Olaseni need to go to the hoop with intent and White needs to pull up and take a jumper or go hard, not the one-footed angling away from the basket hook shots he has been implementing of late. I know Woodbury is a 4.0 and a freshman, but two fouls in 3 minutes was really poor basketball IQ. As much as I like McCaffrey's passion, I think he has failed on the recruiting front to assemble a team capable of competing in the big ten. I do not see the 3 guys next year doing much to help us in key areas like quickness, size, toughness and individual scoring ability. I know some will bash me and use "they are freshman" excuse, but watch Purdue on Sunday and tell me that you can't expect improvement from freshman during the season.

Marble is being keyed on, but he's also not an elite player, or even close to it. Thomas still had an efficient night, despite Iowa's playing pretty good defense. He made tough shots. Marble, when faced with tough defense, goes 2-11 (or 1-14). He's a good player, but not a dynamic go-to guy in the Big Ten. Maybe he'll work to get better in the offseason. I certainly hope so. No way should he be listening to anyone telling him he's ready for the NBA after this season.

Our true freshmen guards played (at times) like true freshmen guards on the road against a superior team. I think they will continue to improve.
Having said that, I think OSU was tired, and the pressure from those aforementioned guards was a factor in Craft's turnovers.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I read the same "shut up, you don't know anything" comments from the same folks, yet they never articulate a response. Who is going to improve enough to make an impact next year? Woodbury is a nice player who works diligently on the glass, but is not close to having a big ten frame. Our guards are nice, but neither is the type of driver / slasher / scorer (take your pick) we need and outside of Basabe, we don't have a big ten frame in the paint. If you believe that Uthoff, Jok and Meyer + improvement from existing players puts us over the top next year, then so be it. I look at May, McCabe, Oglesby, Marble, Olaseni and see marginal, if any improvement, year over year. You can rant about how great the big ten is, well, that's not going to change. Did I expect Iowa to beat OSU last night? Absolutely not. But I didn't expect a 24 point deficit and another late first half meltdown. Again, I like McCaffrey, but the hyperbole about Oglesby being the best shooter he has coached, Olaseni amazing fans with his skills and Marble being NBA caliber player isn't exactly showing up on the court.

So tednugentfan, are you a fan of ted nugent's music, his socio-political views, or both?

tedfan, if you want good answers then post something worthwhile. Because what you post is stupid thus why you get stupid answers back.

Woodbury is a nice player who works diligently on the glass, but is not close to having a big ten frame.

Not even close, seriously? I look at his frame and see someone who is not that far off.

lmao, most of the points our guards have gotten are from driving/slashing to the hoop. Are you watching the games or just highlights?

If you believe that Uthoff, Jok and Meyer + improvement from existing players puts us over the top next year, then so be it

define "over the top" for me. If you mean NCAA tournament team then yes I believe the improvement from existing players and the new ones coming in will put Iowa "over the top".

I look at May, McCabe, Oglesby, Marble, Olaseni and see marginal, if any improvement, year over year.

May is the last carry over from the Lick years and last year he was hurt. May is someone that probably would have been a star in the MAC, but only a role player in the B1G. Oglesby's improvements are hard to see because of his lack of shooting but I do see someone working hard on both ends of the court. Marble has not improved much and the lack of an outside scoring threat have limited the effectiveness of his dribble drives to the hoop. Again you must not watch much basketball if you do not see improvement in Olaseni and McCabe.

I like McCaffrey, but the hyperbole about Oglesby being the best shooter he has coached, Olaseni amazing fans with his skills and Marble being NBA caliber player isn't exactly showing up on the court

A coach talking up his players to the press????? OMG, fire his arse!

Anybody who thinks Iowa won't be in the tourney next year is on crack. I don't know why anybody would have any trouble with how McCaff has constructed the team. He tried to get a shooter in Ogles. Something isn't right in his head and Iowa doens't have anybody to spread the floor now. Gessell will be a very competent shooter. Jok is obviously a good shooter. Another year for Clemmons/Olaseni will do wonders for them.

Outlook for the team is excellent. If I have one complaint it's shooting/athleticism. Iowa isn't unathletic, but isn't terribly athletic either. Who is the best/quickest athlete on this team in the frontcourt and backcourt? Clemmons? Basabe?

Frontcourt- Gabe

Backcourt- Gabe

Midcourt- Gabe

He's such a good athlete but so raw. Did you know that the first time he heard about basketball was a pamphlet he read on the plane ride over from London? Still, 7'5" guys like him who can jump out of the gym and onto a hovering helicopter do not grow on trees.

He would actually have to be careful not to jump to high in that situation. That would be very bad.

Agree.

While he's not an elite player, he's the best we have offensively. And when "it" goes cold, we struggle.

Woodbury is a nice player who works diligently on the glass, but is not close to having a big ten frame.

I think Woodbury is playing very well as a freshmen and should make huge improvements coming back next year. He's 5.6 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Meyers Leonard only averaged 2 ppg and 1 rpg as a freshmen and the year after he had 13.5 ppg and 8 rpg. Big men take longer to develop.
