If the NCAA comes down hard on tOSU, does Big Ten re-allign

What if the Big 10 comes in with a four year post-season ban, and a five year reduction of scholarships. Would that include then the Big 10 Championship game?

Would the Big 10 be forced to realign to keep its competitive balance?

Imagine this nightmare scenario, if they are allowed to play in the championship game.

The opposing team doesn't care because they know either way, they are going to the Rose Bowl. It becomes a game of no significance.

This isn't good for the Big 10 as a league. No way.

And then if they are not allowed to play - a second place team goes?

No good.

No realignment, it would be a nightmare scheduling and logistics wise. As far as the championship game, I imagine the B10 would institute its own ban of that game to align with a post season ban by the NCAA. In fact I'm not sure that game wouldn't fall under the same ban given by the NCAA.

If the Big Ten was smart, and if they wanted to build back some of the street cred of being different than the other conferences, they'd ban tOSU from the championship game for the same amount of time as a potential bowl ban, simply for the reason you stated.

If you let them play in the championship game, not only are you potentially allowing a tainted, currently under punishment team be officially declared your best team, but you're creating a game of no significance.

Or let's say they go 12-0 clean out the conference but they can't play in the Big Ten championship game and it ends up being a 9-3 Wisconsin team vs. a 9-3 Nebraska/Iowa/MSU team

championship games are post season games and the wording for at least the usc case was "postseason ban" which is not specific to bowls; so they would not be eligible for the championship game by way of ncaa ruling.

The suggestion that a conference realign because a school or schools cheats doesn't seem to be very wise in my view.

Interesting question. I don't think the B10 will do anything to focus even more attention on the OSU debacle, so I'll say no realignment.

Very interesting topic. It will be very interesting to see what the Big 10 does regarding this issue.

At least they are stopped before they embarrass us like the SEC or Pac 10. SEE Auburn 2004...er 2010... I guess either year would work. Well, I suppose OSU did that this passed bowl season. No way should they have had those players on the field. Crap, have we become the SEC?!?
The B1G & NCAA need to show some balls; either allow the cheaping, or shut them down immediately, once infractions are known. See OSU this past bowl game.

There is actually a precedent for this question. In 1993, Auburn was in the midst of a postseason ban when they rolled to an 11-0 record and an undefeated SEC season. Because of the Tigers' probation, Alabama (who was 5-2-1 in conference and eventually forfeited every 1993 game because of their own issues) played Florida for the SEC title.

They will not realign because would just be too messy & time consuming. This is a horrible time for something like this going into the conference's initial championship game. The conference wants to showcase the c-game & has this to deal with. As stated above, not good timing at all.

Why would they realign? Either way if OSU wins the division their in, they win that division. It doesnt matter if its the Legends or the Leaders. Realignment would just cause a mess.

How is that a precedent for the conference re-aligning?

If a school is on probation, that team should NOT be allowed to play in the championship game...they automatically forfeit that right.

Besides if they realigned, Iowa would probably be put in the same division with osu, which means Iowa would basically have an automatic loss every year, seeing how Iowa cannot be osu (or beats them about once every decade for the past 6 decades). Osu simply has owned and still owns Iowa.

Nothing to worry about, OSU won't make it to the championship game anyway. They'll win some games, and maybe have a decent record, but they won't win their conference. If they do, I'll be totally disgusted.

How good OSU will be this year is completely up in the air, in my view. Like another poster said, I'll be disgusted, but not at all shocked if they win the Leaders. Ton of talent back.
