If Rogers DOESN'T play this week...

I think that bodes well for an A-Rob return for Ohio State. Kirk said on his show last night that Tony's ankle injury was worse than A-Rob's and Tony missed three weeks.

If Iowa feels he can come back for OSU, or a chance of that, perhaps they try and get by these next two without pulling the shirt off Rogers. I think he is destined as a hybrid fullback anyway, sort of a Jeremy Allen type...so keeping the shirt on would be something they would want to do as he could be a three year starter beginning in 2011 at that position.

If he DOES play this week, or next, then I don't hold out hopes for A Rob coming back for Ohio State.

A Rob also said in one of the videos I linked last night from Marc Morehouse that Rogers is a great blocker.

any chance that jason white gets a look in an effort to preserve the redshirts for rogers and brown or has he changed positions? he has looked decent on special teams so far.

I was surprised in Roger's highschool highlights that he is a better runner than I thought he was. He made some nice cuts/cutbacks and ran to daylight. He is not just a straight forward type runner that PJ Hill was for Wisky. Given the fact that he apparently is a very good blocker, I would like to see him play this week so that Stanzi has better protection when passing.

Wouldn't it be great to have a FB that is a serious threat with the ball in his hands as well as being a lead man or pass protector.

At this point in the season I don't think you mess around. Even in the best case scenario, you don't know if A-Rob will even be 80% by OSU. You pull Roger's red shirt immediately, and get him in early and often against indy. Why worry about 3 years from now at this point? We'll have 4-6 more backs on board by then anyway, and what Ohio kid wouldn't risk giving up a year 4 years from how for a chance to contribute to a title contending team that is going to be going into the shoe in three weeks? Not any kid that I'd want playing for me.

So if Rogers has his shirt pulled, next year he goes in as a known quantity battling Jewel, A-Rob, Wegher and Brinson for legit playing time. It's not unreasonable to think that if the other four look as good or better than he does, the staff advise him to put the redshirt back on for the year. The way injuries go in this position, that's not such a bad option to take for any of the backs that can, including even Wegher.

Or play him now and just redshirt him next year. With Jewel back theres going to be a logjam at running back anyway so why not use him now when we need him and let him develop next year.

Great point, PhoenixHawk. I seriously don't know why any college football player currently on a redshirt would forgo the opportunity to get reps in a Rose Bowl/?? season.

I agree 100%

I think Phoenix just pointed out why KF makes the big bucks.

That is a near impossible decision to make. You're absolutely right that if Robinson isn't close to 100% by OSU you want Rogers to have a little playing time before throwing him onto a huge situaion at OSU.

Yet on the other side you don't want to burn the redshirt if Robinson will be back by then.

Tough spot. I'm glad I don't have to make that call.

Play the kid. He'd be a nice option to have if we are indeed making a championship run. It's not like we aren't loaded at RB next year. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, couldn't Rogers redshirt again next year if so desired?

Why worry about 3 years from now? B/c this is a kid's COLLEGE CAREER we're talking about. Of which he only gets ONE! As fans it is easy for us to sit back and say, 'rip the redshirt off him,' but understand what we're talking about here. This is a career-changing decision for Rogers.

I think KF learned his lesson from previous years and not wanting to pull off a redshirt, but he had to in some cases and I think it worked out well. I agree if they fell he's ready and can out perform Paki then they'll pull it and he'll play.

This move isn't about just an idividual's college career, this is a decision for the TEAM! As a player you do whatever your coach tells you for the betterment of the TEAM. I wouldn't want a player on my team not willing to give up his redshirt for me, especially in a special season like this. GO HAWKS!

Seems to me the best way to address it is for Kirk to talk with Rogers and ask him how closely he wants to protect his redshirt. If the kid wants to play, then let him play. If Rogers would like to protect the redshirt as much as possible then wait another week and see how ARob is doing then.

And I wouldn't play for a coach that doesn't show any concern for my future as a player (ala Zook). There is a balancing act. KF is one of the best as taking care of both the needs of the team and the needs of the individual.

Very well put Tuba. Also, keep in mind that this is more than a 'football decision.' His academic career also factors in. We don't know what his academic plans, timeline, etc. are. I'm very confident Kirk will make a decision that is good for the team and for Rogers.

Oh, come on. How is Rogers' career going to suffer if he plays the last 4 games of this season?

I can see this only going three ways:

1. He plays, and then next year can either put the redshirt back on if he doesn't want the competition, or isn't in the same league with Jewel, ARob, Wegher, and Brinson.

2. He plays, can go in a huge game in his home state, contribute to a BCS quality team in the national spotlight, and make a name for himself heading into some serious competition for playing time (which he was planning on anyway) next year.

3. He keeps his shirt on, possibly watches Iowa struggle running the ball and maybe even lose a game or two this year and their shot at a title, when he and everyone else on the team knows he could be out there making a name in the national spotlight on a Top Ten team.

But maybe you guys are right, and he should Think About His Future, and just chalk something up in the possibly "regret for the rest of my life" category, and then go into next year as a RS freshman fighting with Coker and Brown to be the 5th or 6th man in behind Jewel, ARob, Wegher, and Brinson. Good plan.
