If Iowa was 10-2 right now and the DJK thing happened

would the reaction to the DJK bust be as big as it has been?

BSpringsteen brought this sort of thing up the other day, or was it OK4P, or perhaps they are the same person I ran this by someone in Kinnick today as I was over there shooting a standup for the BTN. (drive 120 miles to Kinnick, shoot a 60 second spot for the BTN, get it on one take, get back in car and drive back to DSM)

It was asked if we were blowing this out of water, and compared it to OWI, or things like that.

Before I continue, this is not a post that is trying to find moral equivalents, lessen the significance of a football player using narcotics, etc. It's not a good thing.

But if this turns out to be just a DJK thing, I really wonder if Iowa's season had gone according more to expectations, in contention for a B10 title/BCS bid sort of way, and this happened, how the reaction would have gone down?

I think people would have still been very disappointed, because of how much of a favorite DJK has been...one of the more popular players I can recall in the 11 years I have been covering the Hawks.

People would have also been bummed due to his absence in the bowl game (something that I have not seen discussed hardly at all, not saying it should be, just an observation).

But I think this happening after a 7-5 season, it's quite magnified, which I understand...easy to figure that out.

This would have been a speed bump on the way to the Sugar Bowl or something like that, had the season gone the way many of us thought it would.

I don't agree that this would have been just a speed bump. We are talking about Iowa fans and it would be a big deal with us.

That being said, I wish nothing but the best for DJK. He made a bad decision. I hope he comes back from it.

First off, I called 8-4 this season, so I don't think we are way under expectations (I just wanted a W in Evanston so I'm not shamed with yet another "just like football" cheer at the end of the basketball game). Second, I still don't think this is a huge deal. Things in Iowa get blown into way bigger deals than they are. If we were 10-2 gearing up for a BCS game, Ferentz's response to this very well could have been like my initial Dantonio-esque response of "let's wait to see how the court system handles this." But when you're 7-5, you get the old "we lose with ya, we'll lose without ya" knee jerk response like we saw every time someone got in trouble a few years ago.

I just don't think it's that big of deal, but I have a cousin in the slammer for 25 years and my step bro is a guest of Uncle Sugar for 12 years, so my idea of dudes who are really bad and dudes who aren't really that bad is prolly a little skewed. DJK's thing doesn't rise to the level of something that would make me want to disown him from the family like the family members of mine who are in the slammer and I think it is less socially destructive than DUI.

Congrats, you were dumb back in August. The collapse in the last 3 games was not indicative of this team's potential. BB's 11-1 squad had fewer all-B-10 players.

I think it would be a much bigger deal if Iowa was in a BCS game. There would be more disappointment in how he let the team down. There would be more excitement and more on the line leading up to the game. Things like a top 10 finish and lots of national attention would be on the table. This has gotten some national press, but nothing like it would if this was a BCS team.

At this point with the way the season turned out, it's not going to be too much of a let down if we lose the bowl game.

Um, not quite. I have a simple formula, I analyze every team on Iowa's schedule against how good I think Iowa will be, then I back out 2 extra losses because Iowa generally finds a way to lose two games a year that it probably shouldn't lose. See, e.g., Northwestern for one such prime example. I also posted a Wall Street Journal article on here that had an analysis of preseason top 10 teams and how often they fail to live up to the hype - the article specifically mentioned Iowa and Texas as primed for a letdown year and I was blasted for posting it because the WSJ is allegedly not a credible source for sports news. I'd love to see how many of the "credible" sources projected Texas and Iowa to be two preseason top 10 teams to collapse.

What is so disappointing we have a senior getting busted. Seniors are suppose to be leaders and set good examples.

Back in November I said the blame on this seasons performance lies with the seniors and the coaching staff.

It's becoming more clear to me this group of seniors, for having such a large class, lacks leadership.

He admitted to everything... Might as well just take him to sentencing...

Let's not rush to judgment, the alleged confession could have been coerced and therefore not admissible in court. There was a guy in the Chicago area whose daughter was murdered, the cops coerced a confession out of him and he was in the slammer for like 6 or 8 months until the real killer admitted he did it. He settled for an undisclosed amount of cash, which I would bet was very large.

Jon, I think the reason everyone is making it a bigger deal than it is is that people on here are looking for a reason, or a scapegoat, for the lack of success on the field this year. This event provides that for them. And one has to wonder who knew what and when and how much did it actually effect the team this year.

He wasn't living with a convicted drug dealer. He was living with someone convicted of possession. Still not good but there is a difference.

I think that was OK4P not me...

But to me the drug issue is really a non issue - tons of students and tons of student athletes use drugs.

The issue to me has always been and still is, why was he living with a convicted drug dealer, and what are the implications for the lack of leadership on the team that didn't succeed in getting him out of that situation.

Drugs aren't as bad as an OWI which isn't as bad as Benny Sapp, Ced Everson and Abe Satterfeld. Is it disappointing? Sure, but that's not really the issue for me.

I think it would be the same, if not bigger, issue if Iowa was 10-2.
Think about Iowa going into a BCS bowl with its alltime leading WR arrest for drug charges.

I think it would be worse.
