If Barta was any kind of AD he would do this....

Black-and-gold googles cast aside, Iowa is, in fact, a better job than Arkansas.

Biggest negative is dearth of in-state talent. But everything else is a major positive. Besides Benddontbreak's list, this might be the most patient program in the country. The pressure to win is nowhere near that of most SEC or even Big 12 schools, and that's a huge positive for a coach, knowing he'll be given time.

All BB needs to do is win 10 games and he'll get a lifetime contract. That's job security.

Here is Bret Bielema's contract: http://www.arkansasbusiness.com/public/ab-Bret-Bielema-Contract.PDF

  • $2.95 million per year salary (an additional $250K is paid, via the Razorback Foundation),
Contract is from 12/4/2012 to 12/31/2018
  • $12.8 million buyout in the first three years of the contract
  • $9.6 million buyout in year four
  • $6.4 million buyout in year five
  • $3.2 million buyout in year six

We have to pay Kirk's buyout, around $11.4 million, then pay Bret's buyout for $12.8 million, before Iowa, even commits a penny to the coaching staff.

Kinnick ticket sales in 2011 were $$23,180,905, and the buyout per year is $2,629,704, so if the ticket revenue went down by $2.6 million (or about 11%), then the heat would be on to make a change.

It would be a hit to pay off $2.6 million a year, but not as much as losing the fans.
  • The same scenario happened with Lickliter, although on a smaller scale.
  • Iowa paid him $800,000 a year to go away, and that was because Carver had become a ghost town (it was down to something like 4000-5000 fans a game).

By the time Kirk gets canned the buyout will much lower.

True, but the fans decided Lickliter's future with the dreadful attendance at Carver.
With every game on TV, high price of tickets, high price of parking, etc., the fans will decide when Kirk will be gone at Iowa.
If football attendance is at 89% capacity or below, then the buyout is close to a break-even status.

2016 will give CJ Beathard, if he is still around, and an improved home slate.
Iowa State, Wisconsin, Michigan, Nebraska, along with Miami (OH), North Dakota State and Northwestern.

This scenario is my dream..

Other than being in the sadistic SEC west, not sure why arkansas is a better program to coach at than iowa. Equivalent money, size, facilities. BB could come home and own the big ten west with a pay raise.

Because Arkansas is a hole and BB is a Hawk. Iowa is a good program and can pay the money. I believe BB can take us to a championship level.
Ditto, Arkie is a second tier job in that conference. When it all said and done. He is a Hawk and has never apoligized for it. We can pay him very well too.

Not to mention that in the Big Ten, BB wouldn't have to deal with the meat grinder of a schedule that he will have to face year in and year out in the SEC. And has been pointed out, he would have low expectations at Iowa.. Go 8-4 every year and he's golden. I think he could exceed that.

BB played for Iowa, coached at Iowa under KF - the ties are there. He won at Wisconsin. He's getting it turned around at Arkansas. I see no reason why BB wouldn't at least listen to a phone call from Iowa's AD, and why he couldn't win here. The whole thing makes sense. Money could be the only issue - I'm not sure what Arkansas paid BB to lure him from Wisconsin.

That said, I seriously doubt our Athletic Department has the stones to do this so it's probably moot point.
