Because they don't limit themselves to that noble goal, they too often overreach, and they have become more overtly political, promoting their own policy and candidate preferences rather than simply defending those whose liberties have been infringed.
They provide (commendable) examples of defending neo-Nazis and right-wingers to "prove" that they are even-handed, but rarely defend run-of-the-mill cases of ordinary conservatives having their speech squelched.
Their stated policy positions are transparently far-left. The ACLU believes that the Constitution guarantees a right to an abortion, but not an individual right to keep and bear arms. They disapprove of campaign finance reform that impinges on free speech, but openly advocate an even more radical solution, full public financing.
