I was amazed to see Iowa isn't the Big Ten's worst FT shooting team

McCabe and Gatens are the only players on Iowa's team that shoot better than Wisconsin's team as a whole.

Eek.

The optimist that I am sees two things in those numbers that I think bode well for Iowa although they are currently 10th in the league.

1. They are getting to the FT line. If I am reading that right, they have the 2nd most trips to the stripe of anyone in the Big Ten behind only Indiana.

2. The upside if and when they improve their percentage (it may not be this year) is that there is easy points to be had for this team/program.

The first point I think is a philosophical attribute of Coach Fran and similar to Mr. Davis Iowa will shoot a lot of free throws because their system dictates that. That is a very good constant to have and for a team/program that is still trying to get over that hump or turn the corner the fact that they are leaving points on the court with missed free throws tells me that they are big picture closer to be pretty darn good versus average/below average.

Certainly this team as a whole is young and even the more veteran guys are learning in a new system. Once they master the system and they stop thinking on the court and start reacting I think the FTs will come.

1. They're 3rd, Minnesota has the most attempts.

2. It's frustrating as hell to watch, but we were all expecting a rough season to begin with. This is one of the more encouraging things about this team. If that percentage ever starts rising, this is going to be a really fun team to watch.

Wisconsin is shooting 80%. That is really good. You rarely see teams shoot that high anymore. They do all the little things to be a really good bball team over the past 10 years

What really hurts is with our roster limited athletically, typically those types of players are good free throw shooters and help offset our inability to score off the dribble....but we are short, slow and bad at free throw shooting....not good.
