I like this team

Stoermer and Stubbs won't be able to compete in the Big 10.

Stoermer and Stubbs are walk ons, they shouldn't be expected to compete in the Big 10. However, I think they both will be serviceable and will not hurt the team with minutes once the conference starts!

Really just missing a serviceable big man and this team would be very competitive this year. I like many of the individual pieces and they will only get better as a team. Pleasantly surprised by Cartwright, Marble and McCabe. Basabe had a better game tonight and is starting to figure it out and what he can bring each night. May is a stud, Gatens is still finding his way after missing too much time. Not getting much at all from Brommer, Archie, Cole!

I'd argue we're getting more from Archie than Cole. Not sure why, but Archie only saw the floor for something like 4 mins. Cole played pretty bad, and has for the last 4 or 5 games.

Cole is the one guy who bums me out. Works REALLY hard, tries his *** off but still makes bone headed plays. By all accounts, a great kid. Glad to have him on the team but just wish he was a bit more serviceable.

Agree completely. Sometimes it feels like we're playing 5 on 4 when he's out there. He has his moments. But then he either disappears or makes a dumb play(that foul he committed 25 feet from the basket with 4 seconds on the shot clock was killer). Still, it's hard to get too mad at him. He's got a ton of heart and is a pretty good leader. And he's had to deal with a lot of crappy basketball in his four years here.

I also had fun watching this game. I thought that they were going to get blown out in the second half, but then after a couple of made shots by Basabe and that oop by Cartwright and May, they really fought for it. It seems to me that this team really understands mismatches and floor spacing waaaay better than Lick's teams.
The key with this team seems to be the defensive intensity when the shots aren't going in for them on the other end. As soon as they made a few shots, the energy level definitely rose about 75%.

On a side note, I enjoy watching games on the U. They move along at a decent clip, and I like those little graphics heading into the TV breaks. (Iowa's hawkeye turned into a U and it screams too.)

I'm not one for moral victories, and we as fans should not condone them.

We should have got the W, anything other than that is pathetic.

I hope this team thinks long and hard about what lost them the game ie shot selection. We were rushing quick 3s with plenty of time on the clock and a lot of them were challenged. Wait for the open 3 or go for a high percentage shot, it's simple.

Moral victories are all we have right now until the team gets better. There's always conversation beyond just W's and L's.
And I'm sure coach Fran and staff are trying to win and not just look better. I think we as fans get a glimpse of what things could be and that shows promise for the future (it doesn't always work out that way in football, so there is definitely some different dialog now with the BB season.)

When Franny Mac gets the horses he needs...look out.

The Era of Lick is way, way, way back in the rearview mirror.

I think I'm going to enjoy this team with a losing record a lot more than I enjoyed the football team. I think this team will play hard till the end every game.

This is what we call the denial stage. Anger should be setting in sometime near mid to late December.

All I'm looking for from this team is effort and improvement. Wins will come.
So far it's been fun to watch.

What are you babbling about? Angerer is starting for the Colts now. Pro Football.
Let me guess: you 'earned' a BGS from Ames U?

Agree there are no moral victories but as a fan a few things jumped out at me:
Scored 73 points. Under previous coach averaged about 50 and a lot of games in the 40s
Ally oop to May. Would have gotten both players some bench time last year
The pace they run is fun to watch.
McCabe is going to be a player
Besabe is going to do good things too

I am interested in Hawkeye basketball again! Has been about 6 years since I even knew when they were playing and cared. Great to have Hawkeye BB to look forward to in a long cold Iowa winter. They will win a few games they aren't suppossed to. Gotta do a better from beyond the arc.

it was great seeing this team with a lead at half. It was concerning to see them go down in the 2nd half. I even thought here we go again, just like during the Lick era, but that is where this team is different. they have the coaching, the will, and the game plan to be able to kick it up a notch and come back. I will take losses if this kind of effort is left on the floor. With this kind of effort, the wins (alot of them) will follow. Gatens game will come back, i am sure that protecting his hand is in the back of his head and it will take a little time. Go Fran, and Go Hawks!!

What I am most impressed with, is the steady improvement on the court. Perhaps not results (blowing an 18 point lead is never good or defendable), but the on-court feel of the team is better. They are improving. Something Iowa teams the past 3 years just did not do. Yes, it was a weak Wake team, but it was their first roadie.

If you look at the on-court stuff, it's ok to get excited. They are doing a lot of good things out there and improving every time out.

I like the energy so much better and the flow of the offense. When Wake made their run it was in part poor decisions (explained by young players and a new system) but mainly because we simply couldn't hit open shots. With Lick, teams would make runs on us and we couldn't even get a good shot off. Last night we had multiple wide open looks from 3 or simply couldn't finish layups. There is a big difference between a young team not quite finishing the play (this year) and a team that can't even get into position to make a play (last year).
