I Like this O-Line

So were still talking about last years game.New Year,New Players.TURN THE PAGE
I wasn't talking about last years game. I started a thread to talk about the versatility of THIS YEARS line. There is always a few that want to go back and complain and be negative, even if they have to just make up stuff to say, as a particular poster did. Try to keep 'them' moving forward, will ya Grandpa. I like your attitude!

I swear to God, I am the only person in America that is not sold on our OL. Like uihawk82 said, Stanford blew us off the line of scrimmage and made us look weak. We need to explode off the snap. And that can help with the pass protection, which was not seen too much. I still think we need more athletic tackles.
See folks, this a perfect example of what I'm talking about people 'critiquing' things. This person has ABSOLUTELY no understand of zone blocking steps or passpro technique or apparently what happened in the game which is absolutely evident by his comments. So why make ignorant statements and embarrass yourself infront of anyone who does? And yes, these statements are made from ignorance (lack of knowledge or information) by it's definition. Amazing! I'm trying really hard to be nice, Rob :) He probably doesn't realize that his 'opinion' just called our lineman weak and un-athletic and that our coaches apparently do not know how to coach 'technique' according to his 'expert' analysis :)

I also disagree with his comments, but for some reason I feel like defending him a little bit. We gotten beaten in all phases of the game especially early, so I think it's ok to have some concern based on our performance in the bowl game. With that said, my opinion is that we do have very solid players coming back on the line and I know that the coaches understand how to coach offensive lineman. Therefore I choose to have a positive outlook about the offensive line coming into the season, but I admit I have only coached youth football and am nowhere near an expert.

Last year a number of times quick DL beat our OL. My take is that was a matter of being up to game speed. Players think too much and the more they play the faster they react and play- at least for most players. There are rare times when players have the speed right off the bat.

I don't see why they can't be a great OL. All the parts to be great are there. All the requirements needed to be great are there.

As an entire group. They're big, they're strong, they're above average athletically, most importantly they're intelligent and from everything I have seen, they are team players. With the solid OL coaching staff at Iowa. I have no doubt that this group can accomplish what ever they set out to do, and I get the feeling being a great OL on a great FB team is at the top of their list.

I hope we avoid games where one player destroyed our entire O. WI and MSU come to mind. What bothers me is that we didn't seem to adjust, or if we did our players were just so overmatched it didn't matter.

What scares me is the pass blocking. CJ is one tough dude, but he's kind of made of glass. He's already been hurt twice now before the season starts (the knee brace was more of a scare....but still).

He won't survive another year like last year. I hope he also has practiced how to slide or get out of bounds. He goes down and I feel so does the season.

Starts up front though.

The Stanford game will be used as a training tool for the offensive line and probably the entire team. Brian F. alluded to this in one is his interviews. The O-Line will be better for the experience and I think they will have a great year.

I'm sorry, but saying CJ is made of glass is ridiculous. Just watch the ISU and the Pitt game from a year ago. He took a freaking beating...then he injures a groin running, not getting hit...but plays through it for 9 games. The injury wasn't related to getting hit...it was twisting to get in the end zone against Pitt, or that is where he thought it hurt it.

Run blocking skills come much easier for young o-linemen. It's what they have been doing their whole careers, at least most. Tackles typically need a year or two of experience to handle the various pass rush techniques...bull rush, speed rush, stunts. We had two tackles that were starting for the first time and moving around due to injury last year. They struggled against upperclassmen in most cases and some high draft picks. It's expected. The good thing about young linemen, is that they become older linemen...and with the coaching we have in this discipline, I'd bet dollars to donuts that they are much better in pass protection and better in the running game. If the top 5 or 6 stay healthy...CJ will have time to throw...and against lesser teams...all freaking day.

Last year, especially against MSU, in obvious passing situations, our coaches did our tackles no good...we should have been chipping with a back or TE on Calhoun. I put a few of those sacks on the coaches.
