I have been pretty quiet lately...time to speak out on Lil Debbie

Ok as some know me on this board...I love two teams the Iowa Hawkeyes and whoever Lil Debbie plays. I have grown up getting Lil Debbie slammed down my throat in Southwest Iowa. With that being said I watch all their games diligently, almost as a fan, hoping they will lose. I have some thoughts on the game and how it will play out. Feel free to join in and have a conversation about the game...not comments we are willing to share.

Number 1 I think Iowa is behind the 8 ball in this one. It is senior day at Nebraska and say what you will that stadium and it's fans are passionate about their football. I also think it is Abdullah's last game at Nebraska, and we do not need more motivation from him. Number 2 I think their defense is starting to find their identity. I also see them doing what Bo loves to do on defense...BLITZ. Now I believe we can handle the blitzes, however, I see our coaches doing their normal drop back scheme keeping all but maybe 2 or 3 receivers in to block and they are too good on the back end to have any success. I do however see some chinks in the armor on defense for Lil Debbie. I think they are susceptible to a strong running team, one that is physical upfront. They have LB issues and if we can get CANZERI on some of those outside zone runs, I think he can pop some big gains. Number 3 their offense is really in a bit of a quandry right now. What QB do we play, will they turn the ball over, will they use their team speed or not. If you watch Lil Debbie you see a team that does not have an identity on offense. They are all over the place with play calling and not sticking to things that could cause big issues for us. We have trouble with a mobile QB, we have trouble with speed at the RB and return folks, we will have trouble with Kenny Bell, he is a legit big time receiver. He however does not like to be pasted...it is critical we hit him early and often. Number 4 special teams are a huge advantage for Nebraska, they have speed all over the field. Number 5 their team is playing to save their coaches job, a loss to Iowa and Bo IS GONE. Win against Iowa and it becomes a very difficult decision for a college to fire two coaches with 9 win seasons!!!

So what does this mean for Iowa. Number 1 we must have good things happen early. Nebraska needs a reason to doubt themselves from the top down. Earl lead by Iowa and the booo birds will be out in a big way. We must win the TO battle. Nebraska needs to help us with one of their 4 to 5 turnover games. Our defense must contain the field, and what I mean is make Nebraska beat you through the middle of the field. That being said, after last week I saw an Iowa team in the 2nd half who found an identity...a reason to believe if you will. I think we are motivated, we are not afraid of Nebraska and if we get the above mentioned things to happen, we can walk of out Lincoln with a couple things. First the trophy, secondly Bo's head on a platter. I am predicting a 10-7 half time lead. In the 3rd quarter we open a lead of 20 to 13...fans become a bit nervous as a couple turnovers lead to short fields. The Hawks go into the 4th quarter and score early to go up 27 to 13. Then Lil Debbie comes back in a big way, with 2 minutes left it is 27-27 after a Kenny Bell TD reception. We march down the field on several play action passes versus Nebraska blitz's and Mr. Meyer hits a 48 yard field goal at the end to seal the deal 30-27. Feel free to interject

Nailed it. Watch out for Bell on kick returns, and deep passes...he is a stud, so is their other WR

Good stuff. It was fortunate for the hawks they didnt see vendric mark for NW because of his speed.

I think we have our hands full with abdullah's speed but a great gap and leverage control game by the defense can stop abdullah.

As others have said I think the hawks need to pound straight ahead at nebby's D and make them run alot side to side with the stretch and zone.

HOw deep is nebby's Dline if the hawks can control the ball and TOP.

It might also be a good time to have a couple end reverses, screens and draws because nebby will be sending the house. I think our Dee holds them and the offense scores enough to win.

Their D line is a bit short on bodies, have a crappy line coach  they have a stud defensive end...his name is slipping my mind. I agree the key to beating Lil Debbie is running right down their throat...no gimmicks...here we come and stop us if you can.

They have two younger more inexperienced QBs. I havent watched them enough to know how accurate they are passing and how good they are scrambling.

But this is a game where we have to have pressure in the QBs face to force them to tuck the ball.

QBs hate that and if you can make them see the pressure quick they will pull the ball down and you cant throw it well when they do that.

Actually, the DL seems to be ok with bodies, better than we have been in a long time. Gregory is the guy you speak of, and he is legit. I've heard nothing but good things about Coach Kaz. Maybe the reason why Iowa's DL has not performed well recently (and the reason the players didn't like Kaz) is because they are soft? Anyhow, the only way I see Iowa winning is by running the ball effectively. Our DBs will likely cover your WRs fairly well, except for a couple of break downs in coverage.

I'm assuming that NU loses the turnover battle, as we do against any team with a pulse. I'd be shocked if we don't go -2 (or worse) in this game.

I wouldn't chalk up the special teams to NU. Our PR game is pathetic. Our kick coverages have been satisfactory. Our KR game has sucked, with the exception of Kenny Bell. Our PK has been ok, not stellar and our P has been great at times, but has had a few really crappy punts at the worst times.

Our O is a mash unit. No TMart. The backup QB is probably a no go, so you're looking at Kellogg, a kid that can throw alright but isn't the most mobile. Our OL has had significant injuries (lost games) to 9 guys, but has peformed surprisingly well considering. The WRs should have been the best (and toughest) bunch in the league, but all of the top 6 guys are dinged or not playing, and have been plagued by the dropsies this year. Ameer has been dinged, too. So, I really don't know what to think about this offense. A steady diet of Ameer and hopefully RKIII can get some balls the the WRs and they actually hold onto them. The play of your LBs will be huge.

That being said, I don't feel great about this game.

As much as I would love a Hawk victory on Friday, I think Nebraska's speed is going to hurt us. That, and their insane luck. I was down by the end zone for the Northwestern Hail Mary. There is no way that should have worked. A depleted O line and they still come out of Happy Valley with a win. 4 wins by 4 or less points, including Wyoming. Nebraska is a Jekyll and Hide team, so I just don't know what to expect from them. But then, so again is Iowa.

First off our lack of depth on the DL was attributed to Coach K...FACT. If you have been watching Iowa at all, or the B1G network you know our D Line has become a strength of this team...in a big way. Don't confuse depth with just bodies...your depth is untested and would be an advantage to Iowa's experienced O line if we get into your DL.

Gregory.

And I love this thread. Crush them....please.

I can see why a Nebraksa fan would say that. But I'm sure its not accurate. At Iowa they teach technique and instill toughness. They do that without screaming and degrading the players. This is the way Ferentz operates. Numerous players simply left the team and the word got back to Ferentz and he found a way to let Kaz leave the program and safe face. Ferentz exudes emotional maturity and he expects that from his staff. For a reference point think of Tom Osborne. From what I've gathered Kazt is a great fit for Bo's temperment.

Iowa will once again only play one good half of football. It is game 12, and we have yet to play a full game against a decent opponent, so it isn't going to start this week. What we need is a couple TO, or some opportunities that are missed by Nebby in the half that we don't play well. If this happens we will have a shot. I think it will happen and the team that wins will do so by 4 or less. The losing teams fans will b!tch, moan, and cry about how they let one get away. Fire Ferentz!!!!! or Fire Pelini!!!!

I'm not disputing that. All I'm saying is that if kids leave because a coach yells at them, then there is a softness there and may explain why Iowa's DL did not (for a couple of years) play as well as they did a few years back. This is supposed to be big boy football, need to be tough.

Honestly, I don't watch TV other than Nebraska games. Iowa's DL may be very good, I've heard they are. I wouldn't say that our DL depth is "untested" as this is the 12th game of the year. Young and inexperienced, I would agree with.

Actually my dad always called them Little Debbie's after the Little Debbie cupcakes I would guess....also referred to as Nebby by many of their fans.

I've never heard our fans call us "Nebby." I think it was a weak attempt to slam us by an opposing fanbase.

Fair enough, and good points. But from what I've heard, Bo isn't quite the screamer/mad man that many make him out to be. Either way, Kaz may not have been a fit for what Ferentz was looking for, that seems certain.

This. I think the players are so use to BP being a giant ****** bag, that Kaz just becomes another screaming voice in the background. Don't be surprised though if this catches up some day. Right or wrong, college athletes are less tolerant than ever before and they have a lot of options.

As I pointed out earlier, Bo isn't that D-bag that some make him out to be. I can see why some may think that , but his players LOVE playing for him and are circling the wagons as we speak. Many recruits and their parents really like his straight forward honesty and family mentality. He is a players coach.

I'll give you that because I have no idea what Bo is like in practice. Only see him on the sideline, (or hear his private recorded insults of the fans :))
Kaz is not a player's coach. Maybe he is behaving under Bo, but for how long? He had some good years at Iowa, but then it fell apart. He's really not a good guy.

Players didn't leave because of his yelling, they left because they recognized he was a tool.

Interesting. I've heard nothing bad about him, hopefully he turned over a new leaf. Guess we will find out.

What did he do to be recognized as a tool?
