I DON'T Want To Be A Developmental Program Anymore!

No offense, but that is absolute bull$hit.

No offense taken. What is bullshit about it? Iowa City is a town in the middle of a very rural area. Imagine being a teenager who grew up in a urban environment taking a college visit to Iowa City. Miles and miles of cornfields and when you finally get there, you find a small town.

In some cases I would agree with this and in Iowa's case I think they could recruit more aggressively but I also think its extremely difficult to recruit a kid to Iowa City who isn't from Iowa or the midwest in general.

This may shock you, but this box office hit actually attracted an audience in places like New York - Chicago - LA - Miami and Dallas. This may also shock you but Hayden Fry attracted kids from New Jersey and Texas. And he was doin it for a fraction of what Brian is payed. Imagine what Iowa could accomplish if it agreed to give someone 4.5mil - plus 2.5 million in potential bonus money - plus 1 percenter jobs for the coaches relatives - plus free education for said same - plus a 34 million dollar buyout - plus overlooking rhabdo and housing scandals - plus lifetime Cadillac medical coverage - plus a private jet - plus a compliant media - plus hundreds of millions in upgrades and renovations to the facilities so they are top notch. Oh btw, that guy Fry I spoke of earlier. He was given none of that stuff (and had fewer scandals) and still pulled in kids from far away. IMAGINE THAT.

I know exactly what Hayden was able to do here. But his Texas & New Jersey athletes were much like KF's, afterthoughts, mid-tier recruits the big schools didn't want, overlooked, or never paid attention to period. And that showed up in a couple Rose Bowls when Iowa looked like they were running in slow motion. Kinda like last year's Rose Bowl.

It was hard to get great players from out of state to Iowa in the 1980s with crap facilities, its hard to get them here now with good facilities. There is a reason a heck of lot more people grow up in Iowa and move away, then grow up elsewhere and then move to Iowa.

Chevin Calloway used to have "Iowa Commit" in his Twitter profile page. He also used to have his Iowa commitment statement pinned to Twitter. Those are gone so he's gonna be #2 that jumps ship. Although we pretty much knew that given Eno's scholarship was pulled due to visits.

Young people leave Iowa because they find opportunities elsewhere where outside of the insurance industry around Des Moines the state doesn't have that much to offer as far as upward mobility. I live now in the Florida Panhandle and we have the same scenario in a beautiful, not crowded area with a very low cost of living.

In my mind Iowa has the facilities and the resources to draw quality out of state talent. In basketball Fran's biggest attribute seems his dogged determination to work hard on the recruiting trail and he seems to know how to sell Iowa. In today's era it takes a modern approach to recruiting and some flexibility in allowing kids to fully pursue their options.

You win.

We need a guy with the ability who can sell a ketchup popsicle to a women in white gloves. Of course we need have a snake oil salesmen on the hardwood and that helped kill the basketball program for awhile.

Going to have to really enjoy the ride from last year as it is going to be likely several years before we can follow another fringe title contender.
